Human Body Systems Pre-AP Project Congratulations! You have surpassed enough biology curriculum this school year that you are ready to become the teacher for a day! You and 2-3 other classmates will research one of the organ systems in the human body. You will create an informational pamphlet to aid you in teaching your classmates about your assigned body system. Your group will create a 5-7 minute presentation highlighting all the key organs and their functions to teach to the class. You will be responsible for printing copies of your pamphlet to pass out to your classmates so they can follow along during your presentation. (Remember you get free printing at the library!) Make sure the pamphlet has detailed information as this will be the class notes for that body system! You may create a powerpoint, a model, a skit, or a poster board to assist you in teaching the class in addition to the pamphlet. Below is the timeline of when each group is presenting. s are due by: February 20th (21st for B Day) Presentation Date Day 1: Feb. 22nd/23rd Body Systems Being Presented Group 1: Digestive System Group 2: Cardiovascular System Group 3: Respiratory System Group 4: Urinary/Excretory System Day 2: Feb. 26th/27th Group 5: Immune/Lymphatic Systems Group 6: Integumentary System Group 7: Muscular System Group 8: Skeletal System Day 3: Feb. 28th/Mar. 1st Group 9: Reproductive System Group 10: Endocrine System Group 11: Nervous System

Project Instructions Today s Task List: Getting Started 1. Select group members and sign up for a body system (pending teacher approval - be wise with your groupmate choices as this is a major test grade! ) 2. Exchange contact information and set up times/locations where you will meet up. Discuss how information will be shared through the group. 3. Assign research roles (based on your specific body system) February 4th-10th Task List: Research Week 1. Identify the overall function of your body system 2. Find the functions of each of the organs included in the body system from reputable educational sources (websites are only in.org,.edu or.gov domains). And of course make sure to keep track of all your sources! 3. Be able to describe how each organ works together with the other organs in the system. 4. Find anatomically correct diagrams, pictures or other visual aids of your organs/organ system to include to show the correct structure of everything. 5. Identify 2-3 major diseases that can affect this body system and briefly describe the mode of attack the disease has on the body. February 11th-20th Task List: Project Assembly and Rehearsal 1. Put all the research together to create the overall pamphlet. Remember it needs to be easy to read and clear enough to serve as the class notes for that body system. 2. Use the same information in the pamphlet to create some visual aid that will assist you in teaching the body system to your classmates. 3. Get together to rehearse, time and perfect your presentation! Everyone MUST speak in the presentation! Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse! 4. Electronically submit your finished pamphlet to your teacher in google classroom on February 20th. Include your source list when you submit the pamphlet. Day of Presentation! 1. Speaking parts should be equally split among each group member. 2. Have the required number of pamphlets printed and ready to pass out to your classmates. Be ready to answer any questions from the audience! 3. Presentation should show preparedness as well as content knowledge.

Digestive System Project - Describe the function of major organs as food travels through the digestive system, and explain how nutrients are absorbed. - Include labeled pictures of organs. - Mouth (including Salivary enzymes) - Esophagus - Stomach (including Pepsin enzyme) - Small Intestine (including Lipase enzyme) - Large Intestine - Pancreas - Liver - Gallbladder

Cardiovascular System Project - Describe the function of major organs and blood vessels as oxygen is delivered to all tissues as carbon dioxide is removed. - Include labeled pictures of organs. - Heart (include the chambers of the heart and which ones have deoxygenated blood/oxygenated blood) - Veins (deoxygenated) - Arteries (oxygenated) - Capillaries - Aorta

Respiratory System Project - Describe the function of major organs as oxygen and carbon dioxide are diffused from lungs to blood vessels and vice versa. How does this maintain homeostasis and assist nutrient absorption? - Include labeled pictures of organs. - Lungs - Trachea - Bronchi and Bronchioles - Nasal passages - Alveoli

Urinary/Exretory System Project - Describe the function of major organs as food travels through the digestive system, and explain how nutrients are absorbed. - Include labeled pictures of organs. - Kidneys - Ureters and Urethra - Bladder - Skin (removes waste through sweat glands) - Lungs (removes waste through exhaling) - Liver (produces urea)

Immune/Lymphatic Systems Project - Describe the function of major organs as the body defends itself from injury/attack in the lymphatic/immune systems. - Include labeled pictures of organs. - Spleen (describe the function in detail) - Thymus - Lymph vessels, lymph fluid and lymph nodes - Bone marrow - White blood cells

Integumentary System Project - Describe the function of major organs as the integumentary system protects the body from injury and how it maintains homeostasis. - Include labeled pictures of organs. - Skin - Hair - Nails - Sebaceous glands - Nerve endings - Sweat glands - Mucosal membranes

Muscular System Project - Describe the function of major organs as the muscular system assists with nutrient absorption and maintaining homeostasis. - Include labeled pictures of organs/muscles. - Smooth muscle (how does it aid nutrient absorption?) - Cardiac muscle (how does it maintain homeostasis by working with respiratory system?) - Skeletal muscle and its function - Tendons

Skeletal System Project - Describe the function of major organs as the skeletal system aids in defense from injury and maintaining homeostasis. - Include labeled pictures of bones. - Bones: Include information about how many total bones are in the adult human body, the longest and smallest bones, and why we have more bones when we are born than as adults? - What minerals/vitamins do the bones store to help protect the body? - Cartilage - Ligaments

Reproductive System Project - Describe the function of major organs used for males and females for reproduction. Describe what happens when fertilization occurs. Females Males - Uterus - Testes - Ovaries - Urethra - Fallopian Tubes - Spermatic Cord - Fimbrae - Prostate Gland

Endocrine System Project - Describe the function of major organs as the endocrine system aids in regulation, homeostasis, growth and development and reproduction. - Include labeled pictures of organs/glands. - Glands to include and describe: Thymus, Adrenal, Thyroid, Pituitary, Hypothalamus - Pancreas - Describe the major hormones produced and how they are necessary to perform the above functions. What happens if we don t have these hormones?

Nervous System Project - Describe the function of major organs as the nervous system regulates homeostasis, growth and development, reproduction and nutrient absorption. - Include labeled pictures of organs. - Brain (distinguish between gray and white matter) - Spinal cord - Hypothalamus - Nerves/Neurons (describe in detail how the shape of the neuron aids in sending signals to the body)
