Recommended Training Pathway Introduction Welcome to the training programme of the North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board (NTSCB) This prospectus should be read in conjunction with the North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Training Charging Policy accessible from www.northtynesidelscb.org.uk or by clicking here Choosing your training pathway The table below will help you to identify the most relevant training pathway for you or your workforce. However, you must check with your own organisation as there may be additional safeguarding training requirements relating to your specific role, or for registered settings, to meet the registration requirements of the inspecting body. Training pathway Employers are responsible for ensuring that staff are competent to carry out their responsibilities for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The NTSCB training programme can support staff in developing their safeguarding knowledge and skills. All staff should be given a mandatory induction, which includes familiarisation with child protection responsibilities and procedures to be followed within their organisation, when there is a concern about a child s safety or welfare. All staff members should receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection training which is regularly updated. In addition all staff members should receive safeguarding and child protection updates (for example, via email, e-bulletins and staff meetings), as required, to provide them with relevant skills and knowledge to safeguard children effectively. 3
Group A Audience: For those working directly with children and young people, who do not have specific overall responsibility for safeguarding but who may be in a position to observe children and pass on any concerns to others or those who work indirectly with children or who require a basic knowledge of Safeguarding to support them in their job role Example of role: Assistant childcare worker, student or work experience, relief assistant, casual volunteer, adult services worker Admin worker, minute taker, receptionist, customer services worker, local authority officers, elected members Essential Safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk (E-learning or face to face), or Child Protection Introduction (face to face) And E-learning in Sexual Exploitation Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Refresher: Every 3 years. Repeat Safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk or Child Protection Refresher (face-toface) or Choose from any of the other courses in the programme to improve your knowledge in a particular area for example Domestic Abuse. Audience: Example: Essential Courses: Refresher: For those with overall responsibility for safeguarding in their organisation, and for those who support others in their safeguarding responsibilities Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) within the organisation and Deputy DSL. As group B Plus Designated Senior Lead for Safeguarding Children (half day) SCHOOLS DSL Bespoke training is available through your CPD website As for group B with continued professional development annually via other methods such as team updates, conferences, bulletins and own research. Content, dates and venues for training This prospectus contains details of all face-to-face training courses included in the NTSCB training programme. Who can access the NTSCB training and how to book North Tyneside Employees North Tyneside employees, who have access to The Learning Pool, can book face to face training courses, or access a selection of e-learning modules. There is no charge for internal users to access training, however a cancellation charge does apply for non-attendance (see below). External partners Anyone who is providing a service to children, young people and families who are residents of North Tyneside, can access the NTSCB training programme. The North Tyneside Council internet based system the Learning Pool provides partner organisations access to face-to-face training and e-learning. Individuals will be required to create a new account the first time they log on to Learning Pool. They can then book or cancel training places directly through the Learning Pool. Learning pool can be accessed via any computer with Internet access, either at work, home, or in a community venue by going to http://northtyneside.learningpool.com Please note confirmations and any changes to training (such as cancellation of courses or change of venue) are notified by e-mail therefore it is essential that a current e-mail address is supplied on registration (work or personal e-mail). Any necessary changes can be made to the account by editing the user s details on the individual account. For further information about registering for a Learning Pool account, please contact the Learning and Development Team at workforce.development@northytneside.gov.uk or telephone on 0191 643 5063. Conditions of access to Learning Pool - Currently Learning Pool accounts are free of charge. However, in future the Council reserves the right to re-claim the cost of each learning pool license from partner organisations. You will be notified prior to any charges being implemented in the future. - Learning Pool access will be provided for 18 months, if no course bookings/elearning completions have taken place during this time, accounts will be archived and deleted after a further 3 years. Archived accounts can be reactivated at a later date, but deleted accounts will not, and it will be necessary to set up a new account in this instance. 6
Charges for Training and cancellations North Tyneside employees, partner agencies who contribute to the work of the NTSCB and voluntary organisations with a turnover of less than 100,000 pa, will not be charged to attend training (see charging policy on NTSCB website here ). Private organisations (including GPs and Childminders) and other for-profit organisations, or voluntary organisations with a turnover of over 100,000 will be charged 25 per half day or 50 per full day for face to face training. An invoice will be issued following the event. A cancellation charge applies to ALL users (including North Tyneside employees) if they do not give at least 2 working days notice to cancel their place, or send another delegate in their place. Please refer to the charging policy on the NTSCB website by clicking here. Registration and cancellations close 2 days prior to the event and it will not be possible to make changes after this time. Refreshments on training courses Tea, coffee and water only will be provided on courses longer than three hours. Please note there will be no lunches provided, however, all venues will either have access to a cafe area, or be within easy walking distance to food outlets, unless otherwise stated on the Learning Pool information. NTSCB Child Protection Introduction Training Provider: North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board Aims To provide participants with a basic understanding of child abuse and neglect To familiarise participants with North Tyneside s child protection procedures Learning Outcomes Target Group Required Knowledge Facilitator Duration By the end of the course participants should: Have gained a basic awareness of signs and indicators of abuse Have basic knowledge of the legal framework and principles underpinning child protection Know where to refer to if there is a suspicion of abuse For those who have had little or no training in child protection, who may work directly or indirectly with children and young people but do not have overall responsibility for safeguarding within their organisation. NTSCB Child Protection: Multi-Agency* Training Provider: North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board Aims: To develop knowledge, skills and the ability to work together with regard to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. To provide an opportunity for colleagues from different agencies to learn together and explore professional dilemmas Learning Outcomes: By the end of the session participants should be able to; Identify relevant legislation and key terms Identify categories, signs and indicators of abuse and neglect Make judgments regarding risks to children Identify how we can incorporate the voice of the child in our work Explore North Tyneside s thresholds and framework of assessments for keeping children safe Describe the referral process when there are concerns about a child/young person Identify the learning from serious case reviews Describe multi-agency roles and responsibilities Identify protocols for information sharing Target Group: Required knowledge: Facilitators: Duration Those who work with children, young people and or parents/carers, who may be in a position to identify concerns and/or contribute to assessing, planning and reviewing the needs of the child/young person. NTSCB Safeguarding Disabled Children Training Provider: Aims North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board To support practitioners in developing their knowledge and skills in safeguarding disabled children and young people Learning Outcomes Explore definitions of disability and learning difficulty Identify what may make disabled children more vulnerable to abuse and neglect Discuss how attitudes and values towards disabled children are formed and how they can be challenged Identify the impact on the family of caring for a disabled child Explore alternative ways of communicating with disabled children, and share good working practice Discuss the learn from case reviews where disabled children have been harmed or neglected Target Group Required Knowledge Facilitator Duration Those who work with children, young people and or parents/carers, who may be in a position to identify concerns and/or contribute to assessing, planning and reviewing the needs of the child/young person. NTSCB: Impact of Domestic Abuse Training Provider: Aims: North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board For both Adult and Children's Workforce practitioners. This course aims to enable participants to identify the risks to and the impact on children, young people and adults where there is domestic abuse, in order to provide protection for them and to identify effective support agencies.. Learning Outcomes: Understand what constitutes Domestic Abuse Recognise the impact of Domestic Abuse Understand your role in working with those who are living with or experiencing Domestic Abuse Understand the importance of information sharing and good documentation Be aware of where to seek advice and how to report your concerns. NTSCB Childhood Neglect Training Provider: Aims: North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board To support practitioners in recognising and assessing neglect, taking into account the development needs of children Learning Outcomes: To recognise signs and symptoms of children and young people who are, or may be, neglected. To assess the nature and extent of a child s developmental needs. To identify concerns about parenting capacity that may contribute to neglect. To identify family and environmental factors which may contribute to neglect. Target Group: Required knowledge: Facilitators: Duration of course Those who work with children young people and/or parents/carers and may contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parent where there are concerns Learners should have completed child protection training AND ideally training on attachment or have a basic awareness of attachment theories, although this is not essential NTSCB Training Associates Full day 13
NTSCB Parental drug and alcohol misuse: impact on children, young people and families Training Provider North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board Aims To enable participants to identify the risks to children where there is parental drug and/or alcohol misuse To enable participants to engage positively with carers and other family members when dealing with substance related issues Learning Outcomes: Target Audience Required knowledge: Facilitators: Duration of course By the end of the session participants should: Know how children are effected by parental substance use and the links with child abuse Know how substance misuse effects parents in the short and longer term and how this impacts on parenting Be able to identify substance misuse in their clients and encourage those clients to seek treatment Know how to access treatment for a parent and the likely parameters of that treatment And will have explored; Definitions of a carer The scale of the problem The effects and impact of drug use on parents, carers and family members How to positively engage with parents, carers and family members How to positively respond to the needs of parents, carers and family members Those who work with children young people and/or parents/carers and may contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parent where there are concerns. NTSCB Designated Senior Person for Safeguarding Children Training Provider: Aims Learning Outcomes North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board To assist the Designated (or Named) Person for Child Protection in understanding their roles and responsibilities. By the end of the course, participants should have; 1. Identified and discussed their role as the designated person (DP) 2. Assessed their our knowledge and skills as DP 3. Identified how to respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns 4. Identified how to deal with allegations of abuse against staff/volunteers 5. Discuss appropriate recording and audit processes 6. NTSCB Impact of Parental Mental Health Issues on Parenting and Children Training Provider: Northumbria and Tyne and Wear Safeguarding Children s Team On behalf of North Tyneside LSCB Aims: To raise awareness of the impact of parental mental health issues on parenting and children. To improve multi agency working with children and their families regarding parental mental health issues. Learning Outcomes: Target group: Required knowledge Facilitator Duration of course By the end of the session participants will have: An understanding of how / what mental health issues could impact on parenting An understanding of the potential effects of parental mental ill health on the child An understanding that if a parent has a mental health issue the family may need support but this does not always have to be dealt with as a Child Protection case. Have an understanding of the risks an individual with a severe mental health illness may pose to children. Those working with children, young people and or parents/carers in a position to identify and support parents with mental health issues which may have an impact on the child. NTSCB Learning from Reviews: sharing good practice Training Provider: Aims: North Tyneside Safeguarding Children Board To provide a forum for sharing good practice in safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and for learning from reviews. Each event will consider current themes and learning and therefore the specific topic will change each time. Learning Outcomes: To reflect on and share the learning from reviews To identify and share good practice in safeguarding To develop a growing understanding of what works well To identify how individuals and organisations should respond to the key issues discussed To contribute ideas for future forums.
