Recmmendatins fr Surgery Why shuld I fllw these recmmendatins? T help prevent nutritinal deficiencies as a result f decreased intake f fd and malabsrptin f nutrients (Gastric Bypass prcedure). T help yu achieve the maximal amunt f weight lss. Help prevent side effects such as nausea and vmiting, hair lss, and dumping syndrme. Getting Ready fr Surgery It is a gd idea t start making changes befre surgery t help yu prepare fr yur new lifestyle after surgery. Chew yur fd thrughly. This becmes very imprtant after surgery. With the reductin in the size f yur stmach and ther changes in yur anatmy yu must be able t chew fd t a liquid cnsistency befre swallwing. Nt chewing yur fd enugh culd result in pain, nausea and vmiting. Start with smaller bites. Cut fd int tiny pieces r take tiny bites (i.e. pencil erasersize). Chse mist meats. Dry meats (i.e. grilled meats r leftvers) are ften nt tlerated as well. Chew each bite apprximately 20 times r until liquid. Practice eating slwly and stp eating when yu feel full r cmfrtably satisfied. After surgery, it is imprtant t eat slwly in rder t recgnize yur feeling f fullness and prevent intlerance. When yu feel a pressure in yur upper stmach area, this is yur new full feeling. If yu experience pain, yu prbably tk ne t many bites, r perhaps ate t quickly. Sit dwn and fcus n eating. Avid activities (i.e. reading, watching TV) where yu can becme distracted. Savr each bite, nting its arma, flavr and texture. Put yur frk dwn between bites. Using infant utensils r chp sticks may help. Practice sipping beverages slwly and drink between meals. Drinking t quickly, gulping and/r drinking t sn after eating slid fd may cause pain and discmfrt. Try using cups r bttles that have small penings t slw dwn yur rate f drinking. Avid straws as they may intrduce air int yur stmach. Avid fluids during meals. Yu may drink fluids up until the meal begins but wait 30 minutes after the meal befre yu resume drinking. Keep fluids with yu all day lng and keep sipping between meals.

Drink adequate amunts f fluids t prevent dehydratin. Yu shuld aim fr 8 cups r 64 unces (z.) per day. Increase yur fluid intake if any f the fllwing signs are present: decreased r dark urine, dry skin, headache, dizziness, lethargy, a white cating n the tngue. When yu return hme after surgery it may seem difficult t get fluids in initially because f inflammatin. Aim fr 4-8 z. f fluid ver an hur. Eventually yu shuld be able t take 8 z. f fluid ver 5-15 minutes. Wean ff f beverages cntaining carbnatin, caffeine, sugar and alchl. Carbnatin may cause abdminal discmfrt and may stretch ut yur new stmach ver time. Caffeine may irritate the stmach and increase yur risk fr an ulcer after surgery. Caffeine as well as alchl may als cntribute t dehydratin. Beverages cntaining sugar and alchl are high in calries and will hinder yur weight lss. They may als cause Dumping Syndrme after the Gastric Bypass prcedure. And last but nt least, alchl metablism is altered and yu may feel the effects mre quickly. Water is a great beverage chice! If yu are having truble tlerating plain water, try adding a wedge f citrus fruit r sliced cucumbers. Sugar free r light beverages with less than 10 calries per serving are als apprpriate. Avid high sugar fds such as sweets, candy, fruit drinks and sdas. Limit fds that cntain sugar in the first 3 ingredients n the fd label. Aim fr n mre than 15 grams f sugars per serving. Sugar alchls Sugar alchls such as srbitl, xylitl, mannitl, and starch hydrlysates may lead t cramping, abdminal pain, excess gas and/r diarrhea. Sugar alchls are typically fund in dietetic fds such as sugar-free candies, ckies, ice cream and chewing gum. Fat Fd and beverages high in fat are high in calries and like sugar will slw dwn the rate f weight lss and may even cause weight re-gain. High fat intake may als cause Dumping Syndrme. Prtein shuld be cnsumed first at each meal, then vegetables and fruits, then whle grains. Eat prtein with each meal. Eat prtein fds first.
