Date of specification approval: May 2016 A- Basic Information Title: Nutrition Metabolism & Execretion Code: MPPh2S8NME Teaching Hours: /week Lecture:6h/w Tutorial:3h/w Practical:15/w Total:24/w B- Professional Information 1 Overall aims of course Semester 8 (Clinical Aspects of Nutrition, Metabolism and Execretion) is about gastrointestinal, endocrinal and uronephrology medical and surgical aspects. Each PBL case contains case learning outcomes that by definition must be linked to the learning outcomes for the semester. Each case is integrated and contains cues that raise potential learning objectives relating to knowledge, skills and attitudes in all areas of biological and behavioural sciences, and certain aspects of ethics and law. The

clinical training programme is also designed around these objectives and it is expected that students may discuss the clinical experience they have had within the context of a PBL case. 2 Intended learning outcomes of course (ILOs) a- Knowledge and understanding: a1- Identify the structure and function of the gastrointestinal. a2- Recognize the liver diseases. a3- Describe the function of excretory and endocrine systems and the processes of nutrition & metabolism. a4- Discuss diabetes mellitus and its complications and management. a5- Explain problems related to thyroid gland and lumbs of the neck. a6- Summarise salivary gland problems. a7- Specify electrolytes and acid base problems. a8- Outline nonsurgical courses of abdominal pain and pain of urological origin. a9- Dscribe acute and chronic renal failure and renal replacement therapy. a10- Explain problems related to these systems from psychological and social aspects. a11- Record psychological conditions and processes (such as somatisation) that may present as symptoms in these systems b- Intellectual skills b1- Use appropriate investigations to elucidate the pathological processes. b2- Show the major pathological processes that may affect these systems. b3- Distinguish the effect of biological, psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors on both the development and perception of these process c- Professional and practical skills c1- Differentiate problems in the relevant systems and their effect on the patient processes. c2- Practice abdominal and neck examination including the thyroid gland c3- interpret an abdominal radiograph and perform near-patient blood glucose measurement
