ASICO Video Education Center MICS Cataract & Toric by Dr. Akahoshi Takayuki Akahoshi, MD, of Tokyo, Japan is one of the leading pioneers in ophthalmology. In addition to completing more than 10,000 cataract surgeries a year, he has won numerous film-festival awards for his ground breaking techniques. With over 20 patents in his name, he has established his skill as not only a surgeon but as an innovator as well. His impact is seen all over the world through his life s work and his teaching. Phaco pre-chop is a procedure to divide a nucleus prior to the phacoemulsification. It is a old technique I developed in nearly 20 years ago and my cataract procedures are performed using prechop. By pre-chopping the nucleus, total ultrasound energy can be remarkably reduced. Maybe less than 10 percent of the conventional divide and conquer techniques. By pre-chopping the nucleus, each pre-chop nuclear. I recoend to start from the grade one or grade two soft nucleus. Pre-start from the collati- vertical collater technique using a combo pre-chopper. A combo collator technique is quite easy. The position of the incision and insertion of the prechopper is just a center of the nucleus, and direction of a pre-chop for insertion is just downwards. Pushing the nucleus downwards, open the blade slowly, everybody can pre-chop the nucleus. - Takayuki Akahoshi, MD Hybrid DMEK by Dr. Tan Professor Donald Tan, FRCS, is the Arthur Lim Professor at the Singapore National Eye Centre, and is among the pioneers of modern corneal transplant surgery for over two decades. He was among the first surgeons internationally to develop new surgical techniques of corneal surgery, namely selective lamellar keratoplasty, including Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty and Endothelial Keratoplasty Please scan here to see the video of Dr. Tan s latest technique - Hybrid DMEK
