Technical Information Lubricant Additives TI/EVO 1973 e March 2010 Page 1 of 6 = Registered trademark IRGANOX L 101 Phenolic Antioxidant of BASF SE Typical chemical and physical properties IRGANOX L 101 is a high molecular weight phenolic antioxidant for lubricants and waxes O HO CH 2 -CH 2 -C-O-CH -- -- C 2 4 Appearance Melting point Density at 25 C Flash point Crystalline, white to slightly yellow powder 110-125 C (not sharp due to isomer formation) 1.15 g/cm 3 (ASTM D 2638-helium pyknometer) 297 C, Marcusson Solubility Mineral oil 0.1-0.5 % Ester 2 % Water < 0.01% Applications and Synthetic lubricants 0.5-1 % typical treat levels Wax 0.2 % recommended Benefits Offers superior thermal stability over conventional phenolic antioxidant Permits reduced antioxidant losses under high temperature operating conditions Approved by FDA/USA for use in blending lubricants with incidental food contact Ashless solid with low volatility Restriction Solubility in some mineral oils is below 0.3 % and should always be checked in finished fluid Product Name: IRGANOX L 101 page 1 of 6

Additive volatility The volatility of additives can have a major impact on lubricant performance characteristics. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) provides information about the volatility of an additive, as well as its thermal and oxidative stability. Test procedure Additive < 50 mg, is heated in a controlled atmosphere (air) at a rate of 10 C per minute from 25 C up to as high as 400 C. The weight loss (in %) of the sample as a function of temperature is represented graphically. Weight loss (% w/w) 0 20 IRGANOX L 101 40 Phenolic antioxidant 60 BHT (2) 80 100 100 200 300 400 Temperature (deg C) 4,4 -methylene-bis-2,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol (2) Butylated Hydroxy Toluene Lubricants with incidental food contact BASF can offer a full range of additives cleared by FDA/USA for formulating lubricants which may come into contact with food. Please see Product Selection Guide for the complete list. Cleared by the FDA under 21 CFR 178.3570, for use in USDA H-1 lubricants with incidental food contact. IRGANOX L 101 Maximum treat level 0.5 % wt/wt The maximum allowed concentration may exceed the solubility limit of this additive in some base stocks. Water extractability When used at recommended treat levels for industrial lubricants IRGANOX L 101 contributes extremely low levels of phenol in water. These levels are actually below the detection limits of the current analytical method for phenolic materials in wastewater. Product Name: IRGANOX L 101 page 2 of 6

Analytical method Test design USA EPA Test Method 420.1 (1978), Total Recoverable Phenols(4-amino antipyrine titration). Detection limit in water is 0.05 ppm. The Chrysler Motor Kokomo Casting Plant modification to EPA Method 420.1 (for raw materials) was used. This involves mixing 50 ml of neat additive with 450 ml distilled water, adjusting to ph4, and distilling. The analysis for phenols is conducted on the condensate.
