Combination Effects of Nd: YAG Laser Irradiation and Fluoride Application to Root Surface on Acid Resistance Nobuyori Nagai, Mitsuo Fukuda, Shingo Minoura, Yasuo Yamada, Jun Tako, Koji Miwa, Takashi Noguchi, Junichiro Hayashi, Shigashi Wakuta, Takanori Sobue, Shinji Tsuboi*, Haruo Nakagaki* and Toshihide Noguchi Department of Periodontology, Preventive Dentistry and *Dental Public Health School of Dentistry, Aichi-gakuin University Accepted for publication 9 January 1999 The purpose of this study was to develop a new preventive method for root dentin and cementum caries using an Nd: YAG laser and fluoride combination. In cementum, twenty periodontally-healthy premolars extracted for orthodontic needs were used in this experiment. After extraction, remnants of soft tissue on the root surface were removed using hypochlorous acid solution. In dentin, fourteen periodontally-healthy premolars extracted were used. Cementum was removed and flattened by sandpaper. A pulsed Nd: YAG laser was used in this experiment. Five experimental sites (A, B, C, D, E) were produced on each root surface. Site A served as a negative control. Sites B and C served as a laser irradiation group (30 mj and 50 mj) respecively. Site D served as a positive control (fluoride only), and The site E served as the laser irradiation (50mJ) and fluoride combination group. The fiber was held perpendicular to the root surface and moved in a back and forth motion for 30 seconds in order to evenly expose the experimental site 2-mm2). After laser irradiation, windows (1-mm2) on each root were created using manicure. After ( these procedures, acid phosphorus fluoride (Buldevold II ) was applied to the teeth in the fourth and fifth groups. Four microliters of the sodium acetic solution (ph 2.3) was placed on each window for 30 sec where Ca was dissolved. The amount of Ca in the solution was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The area of window was measured by image analyzer. The acid resistance was expressed as dissolved Ca per area (, ug/mm2). Dissolved Ca of leves inthe laser irradiation (50mJ) group and the fluoride group were significantly lower than that of control in the cementum, however, the leves in the combination group were not significantly different from the controls. Dissolved Ca levels of the laser

irradiation group, the fluoride group and the combination group were significantly lower than that of control in the dentin. J. Jpn. Soc. Periodontol., 41: 36-42, 1999. Key words: Nd: YAG laser, acid resistance, fluoride
