Winter Scientific Meeting 11 November 2018 Patients with TMD and OSA, how prepared are we as dental professionals? We were privileged to have renowned international specialists to share with us the diagnosis and management of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Building attracting over 300 participants. In her two-part presentations, Dr. Isabel MORENO HAY, Clinical Director of the Orofacial Pain Center from the University of Kentucky highlighted the important role of dentists in the management of patients suffering from TMD. Non-surgical treatment based on sound scientific principles was presented, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach was also discussed. In the presentation on OSA, Dr. MORENO HAY showed oral appliance therapy as a growing field in the management of OSA that incorporated knowledge from the medical and dental perspectives. Different appliance designs, contraindications and side effects were discussed. Dr. Mike LEUNG gave an overview of various surgical procedures for the management of TMD and the rationale for such treatment. He reviewed the research and clinical trials that brought about the paradigm shift in the management strategy for patients suffering from TMD. The indications and contraindications of surgical intervention were also discussed. 11

In the light of rapid advances in medical technologies and diagnostic methods, Dr. Alfred LAU presented a novel treatment concept in the management of OSA, that is non-dentally related and non-jaw -correction-surgical related. Dr. Philip LEE discussed the various surgical solutions for patients with OSA. He emphasised the benefits of computer virtual planning and simulation offering a more detailed and accurate planning for repositioning of jaw bones to achieve optimal outcomes, as well as improving communication with patients. Dr. Ivan TSUI compared the two different approaches to maxilla-mandibular advancement with traditional orthographic surgery and with distraction osteogenesis. He also presented research findings on quality of life of patients undergoing such different surgical approaches. Dr. Daniel T. S. FANG Chairman (2017-2018) Scientific Meetings Committee 12

Specialty Education and Training Development Fund (SETDF) The aim of the Specialty Education and Training Development Fund (SETDF) is to encourage Specialty Boards and the Committee in General Dentistry (CGD) to organize or conduct education and training activities for trainees, fellows, members, and/or trainers. The specialty boards give positive feedback and view that the fund provides an opportunity to nurture trainer-trainee relationship which is essential for building a stronger team of trainers as well as encouraging trainees along the road to becoming a specialist. Towards the close of the funding application, the College Council will look into the possibility of extending the period of provision for the SETDF and will keep the Specialty Board / CGD Chairmen updated. 13

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is gaining a lot of global awareness among different healthcare specialties as well as the public. What makes the under-diagnosis of OSA so problematic is that the condition if untreated can lead to numerous health problems. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we play a significant role in the surgical management for patients with OSA. I am thankful to be given this opportunity for a study visit at the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery in Stanford University School of Medicine. Lane Surgery Centre Sleep Surgery Clinic Redwood City Dr. Stanley Liu The study visit was supervised by Dr. Stanley LIU, an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at Stanford, and a well-recognized sleep surgeon trained by one of the pioneers of the field, Dr. Robert RILEY. His fellowship training incorporated both classic and sleep-specific procedures from maxillofacial surgery and otolaryngology. He performs more than 260 sleep apnea specific surgeries and has been an invited speaker in this subject locally in the USA and internationally. It was also a very well-structured 4-week observation program. The weekly schedule comprised of 6 sessions at operating theatres and 3 sessions at clinics and research meetings. I also participated in additional lectures and talks that involved other sleep medicine colleagues and local dentists as well as at the Faculty Research Day. At 9 th Annual Research Day 2018, Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery 15

I was introduced to the normal flow of a patient s visit to the clinic. At this practical level, it was encouraging to see the degree of patient care. During the observation program, I observed full spectrum of surgeries including diagnostic drug-induced sleep endoscopy, therapeutic Clinic Setting at Sleep Surgery Clinic surgeries such as tongue-tie release, septoplasty, Distraction Osteogenesis Maxillary Expansion (DOME) and Maxillo-Mandibular Advancement (MMA) surgery with virtual planning, hypoglossal nerve stimulation and subsequent titration. I was exposed on the knowledge on the different treatment algorithms and to different surgical techniques. This had the effect of ensuring that the learning experience was elaborative and the discussions were lively and purposeful and covered a spectrum of issues. Group Photo at Operating Theatre into a shared focus for discussions. At the level of inter-personal relationships, the visit produced a great group dynamic. The individuals comprising the study visit were drawn from a wide range of different specialties internationally. However, under the leadership of Dr. Stanley LIU, the party gelled quickly and the members formed a strong friendship who shared the same passion and blended our particular interests I hope, with the knowledge I gained from this visit, to help encourage the development of sleep surgery service in my department and ultimately served the patients with more comprehensive and individualized surgical treatments. Dr Lai In HO 16

Time flies and I have joined the Young Fellow Chapter of HKAM for half a year already! Meetings are held every month with representatives from 15 Colleges for interflowing of ideas, reporting of duties from subcommittees and preparatory work for HKAM upcoming events. One of our meetings was held at the HKAM Yum Cha venue- The Run Run Shaw hall. Besides working through the routines in the agenda, we had a great opportunity to get to know each other and their family members. Delicacies and laughter had certainly brought us closer and more bonded. A meeting was held between Prof. Sophia CHAN, The Secretary of Food and Health Bureau and the Council of YFC on 19 th Jan 2019. Issues such as shortage of manpower and specialist training challenges were discussed. 17

The practice of medicine and dentistry are high stakes, high pressure profession with little room for error, little room for self renewal, which may impact on doctor s psychological and physical health. This has significant implications from both individual patient perspective (quality of care) as well as a health system perspective (manpower). In the view of this, Young Fellows and Trainees Health and Well Being Survey conducted by HKAM will be commenced in Feb 2019. The survey aims to explore professional satisfaction, stress, burnout as well as health status of our young professions. Kindly watch out for our email invitation for the questionnaire filling on-line. Starbucks coupons will be given out as a token of appreciation for the first 300 questionnaires received. The Medical Education Conference 2019 will be held on 4 th May 2019 at the HKAM building. A session on Curriculum Reform will be host by the YFC. Please come and share with us your thoughts and ideas on curriculum content, methods of delivery or mode of assessment. See you then! Dr Julianna Cho Hwei LIEW 18

The Obituary of Dr. Kai Kin CHAU Dr. K K CHAU Dr CHAU Kai Kin, often known to his friends as K. K., sadly passed away due to a short illness on 23 Oct 2018. Dr. CHAU was awarded the HK Government Dental Scholarship and he graduated in Dentistry at the University of Adelaide in 1964. Due to his unique ability in surgery and pathology, he soon completed his training by going through the ranks of Houseman to Registrar at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and obtained postgraduate degrees in Bachelor of Science in Dentistry (Oral Pathology) and Master of Dental Surgery. He was a high achiever in Dental School, much respected by his fellow students and the Professors. He duly returned to Hong Kong to fulfill his obligations to the Government of Hong Kong and worked as Government Dental Officer at the Dental Unit of Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong from 1969 to 1972. He then returned to Australia to become Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer, at the Department of Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology, University of Adelaide, 1972-1980. He was liked and respected by colleagues, including in the medical circle, while in the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was invited to become Reader in Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine of the University of Hong Kong from 1981 to 1986. He later gracefully accepted the challenge and started his private practice in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery from 1987 and maintained his link with the University of Hong Kong as part time Lecturer until his retirement in around 2015. 19

He was head of the Department of Oral Surgery & Oral Pathology, 1976-1977 of the University of Adelaide, the head of the Department of Oral Surgery & Oral Medicine University of Hong Kong, 1984-1985. During his successful professional career, he was the founder fellows of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong, Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, the Hong Kong Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has been the examiner of the Conjoint MOSRCS (Edinburgh) and FCDSHK (Intermediate) Examination. He has also served as a member of the Dental Council, Chairman of Preliminary Investigation Committee 1990-1997 and Chairman of Credential Committee 1991-1997. His popularity among his dental colleagues in Hong Kong is fondly remembered especially by his contributions in serving as vice President and then President of the Hong Kong Dental Association from 1983 to 1985. To those who have known K.K. must surely miss his presence, his views in this profession and his contributions and not least his sense of humour. As a partner in sharing his clinic during his later part of his career in private practice in Oral Surgery and a colleague, we admire his ability in handling and treating patients with care and love. His management of the clinic and other aspects had always been perfect and down to every detail and with due concern for every party. It is with extreme sadness and deep sorrow to inform our colleagues of this sad news. K.K. is survived by his wife Katherine, two sons and grandchildren. We hope K.K. found peace in heaven and we would like to extend to Katherine and his family our warmest condolences. Dr Franklin CHAN and Dr Anthony TSE 20

The Obituary of Dr. Franklin Fook Yee CHAN Dr. Franklin Fook Yee CHAN passed away peacefully on 24th January 2019, aged 77. He became a founding Fellow of the College of Dental Surgeons in 1993. Dr CHAN graduated from the University of Otago in 1966. Since then he had worked in many institutes in New Zealand, Australia, England and obtained FDSRCS (England) in 1974, which was the qualification for appointment as a Consultant post in the United Kingdom at the time. He later returned to Hong Kong and to serve in Government Dental Service. He became the second Consultant Oral Surgeon in the then Medical and Health Department appointed by the Hong Kong Government, the first being Dr Eric FUNG Hang. Since then, he had dedicated to serving the public in Queen Elizabeth Hospital as a Consultant Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon till his retirement in 2002. He had also taught dental students for more than 30 years as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the University of Hong Kong. He continued his enthusiasm in his profession in private practice after his retirement from Government. As a clinician, Franklin was a surgeon with thoughtful mind, gentle heart and skillful hands. As one of our senior colleagues in the Hospital Dental Service, he was remembered as a man of impeccable integrity. As a mentor and teacher, he was respected for his selflessness in sharing his experience and knowledge with his juniors. 21

Franklin never stopped learning. He exemplified the pursuit for continuous learning in Dentistry by attending various scientific meetings, even years after his retirement. He never stopped exploring the world. Trekking in the mountains and diving among the corals were his favorite activities. He never stopped serving. He volunteered in humanitarian work through medical mission trips to developing countries. Franklin truly lived his life to the fullest with a good balance among work, family and leisure. Franklin is survived by his wife Catherine, sons Alexander and Edwin and their wives Jennifer and Camilla, daughter Klara and granddaughter Sophia. May Franklin rest peaceful in the arms of God. We would like to send our deepest condolences to his family. Dr Sai Kwing CHAN and Dr Yiu Kai WONG 22
