Forword Conventional radiography of the bones and joints is holding its own brilliantly against the new imaging techniques. This is true although endoscopy has demoralized the adepts of barium sulfate, ultrasonography has eliminated radiologic investigations as solidly anchored as cholecystography, computer tomography (CT) has become prominent in the study of the retroperitoneal space and magnetic resonance imaging of the spinal cord already ridicules myelography. Standard radiography of the bones actually remains the most practical, quickest, cheapest, and often even the most precise procedure. Although CT now often replaces conventional tomography, CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging are, in this field, still regarded as complimentary investigations. Interpretation of what are still sometimes called plain films is, in fact, often difficult. Anatomical variants and degenerative, traumatic, tumoral and infective lesions are intercrossed, superimposed, and form a tangle, compelling the radiologist to undertake the delicate task of disentangling them. Michel Runge's book of exercises concerning the radiology of bones and joints really confronts a present-day problem. In the spirit of this remarkable series directed by Professor A. Wackenheim, Michel Runge has conceived and realized this book as a game aimed at simultaneously entertaining and enriching. There is no doubt that the reader/player will appreciate it. J. F.
