The Maturing, Transformative Self: Growth Is Not Just for the Young The cultural message is clear: Growth is for the young; decline is for the old. We find this idea in advertising, medical advice, and common sense. Yet some deeper reflection and considerable scientific research suggest otherwise: Older adults cultivate personal growth at least as much as younger adults do. On the evening of April 24th we will discuss how so. The transformative self that part of us that fosters personal growth is our attempt to create a good life. Drawing on scientific psychology and the world s wisdom traditions, we will consider how the transformative self matures with age. Not coincidentally, this maturation facilitates human flourishing for ourselves and others amid the ups and downs of life. Jack Bauer, PhD The Maturing, Transformative Self: Growth Is Not Just for the Young* Tuesday April 24 7PM Jack Bauer, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at the University of Dayton. His research examines life stories and human flourishing. He has authored The Transformative Self: Identity, Growth, and a Good Life Story (forthcoming, Oxford University Press) and co-edited Transcending Self-Interest: Psychological Explorations of the Quiet Ego (2008, APA Books). Jack, a husband and father of two, is originally from Northeastern Ohio.
