In whi In eight countries--burkina-faso, Nigeria, Cameroun, Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique. Nepal and India, the FIGO national society has been actively involved over the last three years to implement a project to influence policies and practices for promoting maternal and newborn health, through coordination with Ministries of Health and other stakeholders. This resulted in varying degrees of successes in the different countries. Details are available 2

Advocacy for increasing national budgetary resources for maternal and newborn health has not resulted in the needed response from governments. Relying on donor support, though helpful, but is not sustainable. 9. What opportunities do you see for strengthening health systems and service delivery at both the global and the country level? Please provide information in the text box below. Again national political commitment is needed and essential. Donor support from global stakeholders will be essential to push towards sustainable programs that governments and national civil society organizations should sustain. 10. FIGO member associations in the eight countries have established continuous channels with MOHs to get involved in policy promotion for MNH.The policies adopted in a number of countries include advocacy for increased financing and implementation of maternal death audits. 14. FIGO national professional associations could be more influential in policies and advocacy for promotion of maternal and newborn health. However in many of these countries the FIGO affiliate has weak organizational capacities to carry out its important task. Also the small number of professionals available is also a constraint. 15. What opportunities do you see to strengthen policy and advocacy commitments at the global, regional and country levels? Strengthening the HCP organizations capacities will play an important role in this respect. 16. Does your commitment(s) include support for research? 4
