Bear Facts Newsletter A Note from Principal Peggy Parsley Report cards are coming home today. Report card time can make parents almost as anxious as students. Is your child on track? Are you doing all you can to support them in school without enabling them? You can and should make report card time a chance to talk about your child's progress in school. You should also talk about your expectations. Say things like, "You don't have to be the best. But I do expect you to do your best." Remind them that effort is an important as ability. Help your child set goals based on their current performance. In kindergarten through third grade, students will be setting BUG (Bring Up Grades) goals with their accomplishments being celebrated at the end of the second and third trimesters. The BUG program is a collaborative effort with the Kiwanis and Key Club from Palmer Ridge High School. BUG, along with honor roll recognition for fourth through sixth graders, is a way to recognize and reward student academic achievements and to motivate and improve student performance. We also recognize students for perfect attendance as being at school plays a big role in their success. As you only see report cards three times a year, please be looking at your child's work when it comes home. Do they do their homework? Do they do their best? Do they turn in assignments? There is a link between how hard students work and how much they learn. Help your child develop good work habits. Our PTO will be sponsoring short (@30 minutes) sessions throughout the year on ways to help your child. I would highly encourage you to attend these sessions. During the months of November and December, students will be focusing on the pillar of CARING. There are two main ideas that apply to the pillar of caring. Concern for others: Show compassion and empathy. Be kind, loving and considerate in your actions. Be grateful for the things people do for you. Forgive the shortcomings of others. Don t be mean or cruel to others. Be sensitive the feelings of others. Compassion: Children can learn that people should be considerate and caring. Instead of ignoring hurt, confusion, anger, and sadness they can learn that people should reach out to one another. As Plato quoted Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle! we can never tell what difficulties another person is facing, and your kind word or action might make all the difference. Here are few things you can do with your child to help teach them about caring. Identify feelings and encourage them to talk about their feelings and to think about how others might feel in different situations. Never underestimate the power of a smile. Even if you don t know someone, it doesn t hurt to smile, and it can brighten someone s day. Smiles can be very contagious too! Talk about people that are less fortunate. Discuss the difference between wants and needs..
