Kiwanis Auburn January 2017 www.auburncakiwanis.org P.O. Box 434, Auburn, CA 95604 President s Message Hi All, Another calendar year and a quarter of the Kiwanis year is history. The big news is our See s candy sales at Christmas. We didn t quite match the great year we had last year but our profits were close to what we had budgeted, which means we can continue to do the things we do to help our community. I want to thank all those who worked at the See s store. It is hard to single out people for special recognition but I would like to recognize Gil Hemmer, Lori Heitz, Bob Tutton, and Don Ball for putting in that extra effort. I also especially appreciate the effort put in by two nonmembers: Susan Moore and Jeanne Rupp. We had a busy couple of months as you can see from the newsletter. Thanks for your service. Dictionary Project Mr. Elias' 3rd grade class at Colfax Elementary School with their dictionaries from the Kiwanis Club of Auburn Thanksgiving Dinners Thanksgiving Dinners: Our Club members donated the fixings for 8 turkey dinners and we purchased two ready to eat dinners. One of the foster families, the Ceccarelli family, sent us a picture as a thank you. The Ceccarelli Family with their Thanksgiving Basket

Random Acts of Kindness Laurie Tyrell from the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) asked if Kiwanis could help a family in need at Christmas. The Random Acts Committee approved the purchase of a $50 gift card for shoes and some of our members stepped up and provided additional items: Baby things were provided by Tracie, Pam and Pam s daughter; Kim shopped for the 10-year-old girl; Lori shopped for the six-year-old girl; Ken T.-$50 and Jeff-$50. Our club made sure this family would enjoy their Christmas. Thank you letter from Laurie: Thank you Lori, and all of the others who helped make this Christmas special for this family. I have called the grandmother and she was so surprised to hear that all of you contributed to making this Christmas special. I have requested that if possible, could she have the kids make a card for the Kiwanis to thank all of you. Thank you for caring for kids and families of Placer County. Happy Holidays Christmas for Kids Thanks to a $1000 Grant from New York Life Insurance/Lt Governor Laird Smith, we were able to shop with 25 underprivileged kids selected by Rock Creek Elementary School. Each child received $50 to spend.

Kiwanis Float Festival of Lights Parade Key Club Update Our Key Club was busy during the month of December. They finished a dozen blankets and delivered them to Acres of Hope kids. They made Christmas cards for a rest home at the last meeting before Christmas break and delivered them. Pictures of both events are not included because both places did not want them taken. Several Key Clubbers rang the bell for the Salvation Army and they hosted the December Key Club DCM that was held at the Placer High Cafeteria. The other events were shopping with underprivileged kids for Christmas for Kids and decorating and participating in the float for the Festival of Lights parade. They will be up and running again once school is back in session after the Christmas break on January 3rd. Our next board meeting will be on January 5th. The following Thursday, January 12th will be our next general meeting at 12:45 in room 617. If you are interested in attending, you need to check in at the office first. We would love to see you there. Our Key Clubbers wish to thank the Kiwanis Club for all of your support. We will be gearing up for DCON in April. The early registration is due the first part of February. Lori Heitz, Kiwanis Key Club Advisor

See s Candy Thanks to everyone for making the See's Candies sale another success! Gil Hemmer Interclub Several Auburn Kiwanis attend the Kiwanis Club of Roseville meeting on December 29th. Lt. Governor Laird Smith spoke and Ken Moore, Kim Hemmer, Lori Heitz, Bob Tutton, Shari Smith, Jim Holmes & Tracie Coyle attended. Division 44 Membership Challenge Lt. Governor Laird Smith has introduced a Membership Challenge. Across the District, we have lost a considerable number of Kiwanians over the years. The Program presents a considerable opportunity to grow our membership but it will take work on everyone s part. Please see the Kiwanis Division 44 Newsletter for details.

Kiwanis January 11 th Meeting Speakers and Authors of Early Auburn April McDonald & John Knox Admin Fund Raiser We will have an admin fundraiser on Wednesday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Pam and Dave Irwin.
