Bowel Cancer UK Bowel cancer is currently the third most common cancer in Scotland and the second biggest cancer killer. Over 3,700 people in Scotland are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year, and around 1,500 people die from the disease. However, it doesn t have to be this way, as bowel cancer is treatable and curable, especially when caught early. If diagnosed at the earliest stage, over 98% of people will survive bowel cancer. Sadly, less than 20% of cases in Scotland are actually diagnosed this early. That s why we re dedicated to raising awareness through our award-winning health promotion volunteer programme. What will I learn? Our volunteers will deliver a presentation on bowel cancer and highlight the following key awareness and prevention messages: Signs and symptoms learn the key facts about bowel cancer Healthy lifestyle and prevention - tips on how to reduce the risk of bowel cancer NHS Bowel Screening learn about the NHS bowel screening programme and the importance of taking the test awareness materials will also be available, and our volunteers are happy to answer any questions you might have. Very often our volunteers have a personal connection to bowel cancer, so they have a great deal of knowledge and experience to share. Scotland s 65+ population is projected to rise by 21% between 2006 and 2016 and by 62% by 2031. In the session we will cover: Who is a carer? The effects of caring - this will look at the impact on the health and wellbeing of a carer as a result of caring role. Being a carer friendly workplace - this part will provide practical help in setting out a staff carer policy, with examples from Carers Trust The benefits of a carer friendly workplace - this will look at why it is important for employers and employees to become carer friendly To book: Please email kmartin@carers.org If you'd like a volunteer to attend your organisation, please email
