International Conference ON INTERFACE BETWEEN AYURVEDA & EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE (6 th International Conference of AAPNA, USA in India) 15 th -17 th February 2013. Venue : Pragati Green Meadows and Resorts Limited, Proddutur, Sharkarpally Mandal, R.R. Dist. Andhra Pradesh. About the Seminar Keeping in view the growing importance of traditional medicines, and especially Traditional Indian Medicine in view, TIM is the one and only comprehensive system that is recognized by WHO, the western world, and European countries as an alternative to allopathy. Our emphasis is to shape TIM as evidence based medical system by way of exploring, and utilizing the scientific aspects of TIM and the renaissance of such scientific systems. Our endeavor is to raise awareness and educate people through the revelations of this seminar. Eminent speakers of various walks of life and experts in different fields of medicine will be sharing their expertise, research results, scientific explanations and other aspects of TIM. Preface What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is the knowledge of life sciences. Ayurveda bestows positive health to human kind with the concept of prevention first and cure next. Though it appears empirical, the concept of Tridosha (Vata-Pitta-Kapha) depicts the neurohormonal secretary functions of the human body in physiology and pathology. Based on the interplay between the doshas, the treatment is explained scientifically. After several thousands of years of observations and experiences, the ancient seers and sages of India documented medical science in the form of scripts. The teaching and practice of Ayurveda has traditionally been propagated through generations on the basis of these scripts / manuscripts. Most probably, Ayurveda is the only science which has continued from ages without interruption. However, the scientific validity of the textual claims remains a puzzle for modern day scientists. Therefore, it is necessary to have a correlation between Ayurvedic professionals and modern evidence based medical professionals. What is Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM)? Evidence-based medicine is the integration of the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. EBM is the concept of formalizing the scientific approach to the practice of medicine for identification of "evidence" to support our clinical decisions. It requires an understanding of critical appraisal and the basic epidemiologic principles of study design, point estimates, relative risk, odds ratios, confidence intervals, bias, and confounding. By using this information, clinicians can categorize evidence, assess causality, and make evidence-based recommendations. EBM allows analysis of complicated material so that we can make the best possible clinical decisions for the population we serve".
What we practice should have evidence in today's terms to meet the challenges of today... particularly in medicine, and specifically in traditional medical systems. EBM means that we base our decisions on evidence of benefit. If a therapy has sufficient evidence of benefit, we should recommend and practice it. If insufficient evidence of benefit exists or if evidence indicates that the therapy will not benefit patients, our recommendation and practice leads to failure and lack of confidence. Our goals as physicians are to provide treatment that makes our patients better and to protect our patients from treatment that may cause harm. Why is it important? New types of evidence are being generated which can create changes in the way patients are treated, and much of this evidence is being applied to patient care. Knowledge translation - increasing the uptake of the best available evidence into practice - has always been a challenge, and the medical fraternity needs to meet these challenges from time to time. The challenge here means not only the evidence based medicine and its updates but also exploring and exploiting the best options, products, services, and practices. Naturally, Ayurveda - the Indian system of medicine emerges as a leader among Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAMs) in its contribution towards health care, both preventative and curative. Traditional/Complementary/Alternative Medicine Traditional / Complementary and alternative medicine is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not currently considered to be part of conventional medicine.while some scientific evidence exists regarding some CAM therapies, for most there are key questions that are yet to be answered through well-designed scientific studies--such as: Are these therapies safe? Do these therapies work for the diseases or medical conditions for which they are used? Are Traditional / Complementary and Alternative Medicine Interchangeable Terms? Traditional / Alternative / Complementary Medicine are used together with conventional medicine. Example: Using aromatherapy or reiki or meditation to help lessen a patient's discomfort following surgery. Major Types of Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine Alternative medicine systems: Built upon complete systems of theory and practice. Examples: ayurveda, homeopathic medicine, naturopathic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine. Mind-body interventions: Uses a variety of techniques designed to enhance the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. Some techniques that were considered CAM in the past have become main stream (patient support groups and cognitive-behavioral therapy). Other mind-body techniques are still considered CAM, including meditation, prayer, mental healing, and therapies that use creative outlets such as art, music, or dance. Biologically based therapies: Uses substances found in nature ( herbs, foods, and vitamins). Example: Shark cartilage to treat cancer.
