Proclamations for Governors, Senators and Mayor Letters to the Editors Promoting Your Program 97 Ways to Promote Alzheimer s and Dementia Staff Education Week Promotional Materials Resources and Important Web Sites and much more Currently there are no national or international standards regarding dementia education for all health care professionals, front line staff and first responders regardless of the industry they serve. President Obama passed The National Alzheimer s Plan (NAPA) that went into effect in 2012, which as one of its components will address dementia education. Also, at the federal level, CMS sent Nursing Homes dementia education tools for CNA s training but a facility can elect to use any training system they wish. NCCDP curriculum is recognized on the CMS crosswalk web page. Currently, the regulations for dementia education are different from state to state and for each industry. The NCCDP recommends at minimum an initial 12 hours of dementia education for all staff. Throughout the year, additional dementia education should be provided that incorporates new advances, regulatory updates, culture changes, sexuality and intimacy as well as innovative ideas. The NCCDP made it easy for the educators and in-service directors to provide ongoing live education by providing prepared complimentary staff in-services to download. The NCCDP promotes initial live dementia education and CDP certifications of all staff who qualify as Certified Dementia Practitioners (CDP ). The NCCDP recommends that, at minimum, there should be one Certified Dementia Practitioner per-shift. The NCCDP recommends that every health care organization have a trained and certified Alzheimer s disease and dementia care trainer CADDCT certified by the NCCDP who will utilize up to date NCCDP Dementia curriculum. Caregivers are now asking if the staff has completed dementia education and the amount of education the staff have received. They are now asking if you employ CDP s. Many companies now add the CDP credential as part of the job description and it is now included in the hiring practices for many disciplines. The CDP certification and dementia trained staff have become an important marketing aspect of services offered by a company and is a must in today s competitive market not only for the company to have the competitive edge but to ensure well trained staff is providing compassionate and competent care. Employees who are CDP certified have opportunities for career advancement and accountability as a CDP. The NCCDP recommends that all educators are certified Alzheimer s disease and Dementia Care Trainer (CADDCT ) through the NCCDP Certified Alzheimer s disease and Dementia are Trainer Certification CADDCT class. CADDCT trainers use the most up-to-date training materials. The NCCDP recognizes the importance of educated and certified dementia unit managers and certifying the Dementia Unit Managers as Certified Dementia Care Managers (CDCM ). 4

Dementia Unit Managers report, They have received little training as a Dementia Unit Managers and many states they do not have current policies and procedures for dementia units. NCCDP also provides certification for Facilitator who run support groups called Certified Dementia Support Group Facilitator CDSGF. NCCDP provide Alzheimer s disease and Dementia Care training to First Responders and Law Enforcement educators and certification as Certified First Responder Dementia Trainers. NCCDP sister company, ICCDP International Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners was formed in 2012 to support the International community who also seek Alzheimer s disease and dementia education and dementia certification for their front-line staff and health care professionals. One certification that is offered is the CDMCP Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional. The ICCDP collaborated with the Center for Applied Research in Dementia to provide a globally recognized comprehensive Montessori course (person centered care approach) developed by Dr. Cameron Camp. The other globally recognized certification is the CDP certification and the 7-hour online ADDC seminar at www.iccdp.net NCCDP recognizes Educator of the Year, Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year and Certified Dementia Practitioner of the Year. The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners, LLC was formed in 2001 by a group of professionals with varying work and personal experiences in the field of dementia care. The Council was formed to promote standards of excellence in dementia and Alzheimer's disease education to professionals and front-line staff and other service providers who provide services to dementia clients. As the number of dementia cases continue to increase nationally and worldwide, there is a great necessity to ensure that care givers are well trained to provide appropriate, competent, sensitive direct care and support for the dementia patient. The goal of the NCCDP is to develop and encourage comprehensive dementia education, standards of excellence and compassionate delivery of dementia care services by health care professionals and front-line staff to the older person with dementia. 5
