The Excretory System By: Sarmad, Nick, Bryson, Devin, Josiah, Rohaan

What does it do? The excretory system has a big job. See, there are red/white blood cells in your blood, but there is also lots of salt and waste. The excretory system s job is to remove waste.

Parts of the excretory system

-Kidneys filter half a cup of blood every minute, removing wastes and extra water to make urine. The kidneys -The kidneys are two bean shaped organs. -They are around the size of your fist. -They are located just below the rib cage. -One kidney is on each side of your spine.

The ureters The job of the ureters is very simple. All they do is transport waste from the kidneys to the bladder.

The bladder Shaped like a pear, the bladder stores the urine created by the kidneys. This way, you can go for a while without relieving yourself.

The Urethra The Urethra is a tube that allows urine from the bladder to exit the body. Nature calls...

Diseases and other things that affect the excretory system

Kidney failure Kidney failure is life threatening and has a number of causes. It can happen because of low blood pressure, blockage in the urinary tract, muscle breakdown and hemolytic uremic syndrome (which is further explained in the next slide). Symptoms include fluid retention (swelling in the legs), shortness of breath, fatigue, confusion, nausea, weakness, and irregular heartbeat. The only known cure is a kidney transplant.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a disease where large amounts of red blood cells and platelets (the things that cause scabs) are destroyed. The damaged blood cells can clog the veins/arteries of the kidneys and cause kidney failure. Symptoms include stomach pain, vomiting, fever, bloody diarrhea/urine, decreased urination, small unexplained bruises, bleeding nose/mouth, fatigue, irritability, seizures and high blood pressure. Cures include fluid replacement, red blood cell transfusions, platelet transfusions, plasma exchange and kidney dialysis (filtering with a machine instead of a normal kidney).

Bladder Cancer Another disease is bladder cancer, in which a cancer tumor forms on the bladder wall. Some of the symptoms is blood in your urine, back pain, frequent urination. Also some of the causes are tobacco use, being exposed to chemicals ( I couldn t find out what these chemicals are ) It past exposure to chemicals. It s also not clear what causes bladder cancer but those are the possible causes

Kidney stones A kidney stone is chemicals from your urine that stick together in kind of a rock/stone formation. Some symptoms are Pain in the back or belly area Pain or burning while urinating Blood in urine Drinking water helps dissolve kidney stones

Uremia Uremia is a medical condition produced by when your kidneys become damaged the bodily waste or toxins that are that your kidneys would normally send into your urine they end up in your bloodstream instead. Uremia is caused by extreme damage to your kidneys. As a result that the kidneys failure to get rid of waste products by urine. The products of protein metabolism build up in the blood but they are normally filtered out when blood passes through the kidneys. Some symptoms of uremia are, a loss of mental concentration, little to no appetite, headaches, nausea etc. The skin will become dry and flaky and start to peel it also may turn a yellowish to tan colour

Keeping the excretory healthy The best way to keep the excretory system healthy is by doing one thing-drinking lots of water. This helps your kidneys to function, as they need water to make urine. Those bottles are for more than just flipping, kids...
