CREATING HUMAN-CENTRED ORGANISATIONS Beyond Stress Management: The Mind Mood Mastery Programme Surviving to Thriving

Today we ll look at: - What are stress and burnout, what happens and how to recognise them? - The personal costs of not prioritising self-care and why we do that. - Promoting wellbeing and success at personal and inter-personal levels. - Presence, trust, values and the foundations of thriving and success. - What next: from nice idea to being in action

What is Culture? I don t know how it started either; all I know is that everyone does it.

1. Stress and Burnout

Why is it important to understand stress? - No-one is immune. - Pre-cursor to bigger health problems. - Costs both personal and financial - Collective responsibility not individual failing.

The business costs of mental ill-health

The stress response is a vital survival strategy to keep us safe.

Pressure or stress - what s the difference? Stress is never a good thing.

The long-term effects Physical Mental-Emotional Wider Impact Fatigue Palpitations, dizziness Headaches, migraine Heartburn Irritable Bowel Infertility Auto-immune conditions Diabetes Cardio-vascular disease Skin conditions Anxiety Depression Insomnia Mood swings Low self-esteem Reduced concentration Irritability Over consumption Damaging behaviours Addictions Low morale Reduced performance More errors Cover up, blame Lack of trust Lack of adaptability Plunging Profits

Precipitating factors at work High job demand + Low decision authority + Poor social support

Foot on the gas Foot on the Brake Nothing going on here.

How well do you now yourself? What are your triggers? What are your warning signs? What are your habitual patterns of reaction? How good at you at recognising them? What do you do to dial down stress?

Burnout 1- Exhaustion There s still some work left in this one. Get them another cup of coffee.

Burnout 2 - change in attitude (e.g.cynicism, blame, don t care)

Burnout 3 - subjective inadequacy Leads to workaholism

The burnout answer? Workaholism

Are you a workaholic? Do you Say I ll just finish this then I ll stop but can t? Spend much more time working than initially intended? Work in order to reduce feelings of guilt, anxiety, or helplessness? Get told by others to cut down on work without listening to them? Become stressed if you are prohibited from working? Spend less time on leisure activities because of your work? Work so much that it has negatively influenced your health?

ENERGY Exhaustion/Vigour JOB SATISFACTION Very Poor/High Surviving or Thriving INVOLVEMENT Cynicism/Engagement WORKAHOLISM Extreme/Balanced

2. Identifying personal factors Why do we do this to ourselves?

Personal factors Over-commit (can t say no) Need for approval Perfectionism Self-critical High achiever/low self-efficacy Self-destructive coping strategies

Deep-seated patterns

Thought Traps Deeply held beliefs that take over before we are even aware of them. I can t. I m not. enough. I m too. It s all my fault. I m not lovable. I m not worthy. I don t belong. It s always all down to me. Nothing I do will ever be enough Nobody cares. If they knew this about me. I m a fraud.

What are your thought traps? What deeply held beliefs do you have about yourself? What deeply held beliefs do you have about life? What do you say to yourself that gets in the way of your thriving and being successful? What patterns of thought run you?

3. What can we do about it?

Presence A major protective factor

From surviving to thriving Presence a) Somatic Awareness: what s happening with me? b) Adaptability: how am I noticing and responding to what s going on around me? c) Intention: What do I want to create moving forward? How are my actions now shaping the future?

Brain Waves PRESENCE

Presence: a) Somatic Awareness Being grounded in your body

Press Pause Place Posture Poise

Who s in charge - green blob or red blob? Left Prefrontal Cortex Amygdala Self-aware Balanced Open Perspective Learning Survival mode Reactive 'All about me Shut down No trust

4. Promoting wellbeing at inter-personal levels - from individual to collective responsibility

4 a. Positive factors in the workplace

1. Positive factors in the workplace Balanced Workload v. always on/available, overload, can t talk, no-one listening Autonomy v. Unclear boundaries/role definition, lack of choice and control Involved in decision-making v. hidden agendas/duplicity/no trust Positive relationships with colleagues v. bullying, bias, social exclusion, conflict, discrimination, gossip, complaining, micro-aggressions. Support v. weak leadership, hands-off management, insufficient resources/information

4b. TRUST

2. TRUST Personal and group wellbeing go hand in hand.

High Trust Companies 74% less stress 40% less burnout 50% more productive 106% more energy 76% more engagement (Edelman Report 2017 - Global Crisis)

What builds trust? How am I trustworthy?

Transparency (Complete) Care (Connection, Belonging) Building Trust Respect and Recognition (Treat as a volunteer) Purpose and Values (Pursue noble goals) (Organisational Vitality Study, Six Seconds, 2017)

Who s in charge - green blob or red blob?

U.S.B. U = Unplug S = Slow Down B = Breathe

4 c. Values Thriving: A world where we experience ourselves as the source of the quality of our lives. (Antonovsky)

VALUES - Principles or standards of behaviour. - One s judgement of what is important in life. Synonyms: moral principles, ethics, moral code, standards, moral standards, code of behaviour, rules of conduct, standards of behaviour society's values are passed on to us as children we internalise our parents' rules and values"

VALUES At a personal level: Bedrock of integrity, thriving and fulfilment

VALUES At a personal level: Bedrock of integrity, thriving and fulfilment

VALUES At an inter-personal level: Foundation of trust and group/team effectiveness

What are your values? Authenticity Achievement Adventure Authority Autonomy Balance Beauty Boldness Compassion Challenge Citizenship Community Competency Contribution Creativity Curiosity Determination Fairness Faith Fame Friendships Fun Growth Happiness Honesty Humor Influence Inner Harmony Justice Kindness Knowledge Leadership Learning Love Loyalty Meaningful Work Openness Optimism Peace Pleasure Poise Popularity Recognition Religion Reputation Respect Responsibility Security Self-Respect Service Spirituality Stability Success Status Trustworthiness Wealth Wisdom

4 d. Emotional Self-Awareness (ESA)

4. Emotional Self-Awareness (ESA) High ESA in leader = 92% had high performance teams Low ESA in leader = 78% had negative climate, low performance (Korn Ferry Institute, 2017)

What is ESA? A group of learnable competencies enabling us to : A. READ our own and other people s feelings B. INTERPRET them accurately in relation to the context C. ADAPT and TRANSLATE this into appropriate and effective action or non-action

Stress Sense of Self ESA

I m just going to invest 20 mins in boosting my performance, productivity, emotional balance and wellbeing.

Presence: b) Adaptability Ability to respond appropriately in line with values

Good People Skills 1. Respectful 2. Manage their emotions 3. Consistent 4. Demonstrate integrity 5. Listen with empathy 6. Clear boundaries 7. Deal with conflict well 8. Produce results ethically

Presence: c) Intention Laying the track down in from of the train

VALUES underpin SUCCESSFUL ACTION Where am I/are we going? Why? What is the underlying purpose? What are the values to guide me/us? How will I support myself/us in staying on track? How will I/we know when I/we am going off track? What steps will I/we take to build, retain and restore trust?

ME PRESENCE, MEANING Being Human-centred US BELONGING, TRUST IN THE WORLD PURPOSE, VALUES, Everyone matters, everyone thrives, everyone succeeds

Systems Coherence - Values Systems Coherence = VALUES - Meaning BELONGING MEANING - Belonging A world where we experience ourselves as the source of the quality of our lives. (Antonovsky)

My three main takeaways and what I will do: 1. 2. 3.

"To identify what really matters in our life, to acknowledge the potential we all have within ourselves and to apply joyful effort in actualising it are some of the essentials keys to human flourishing." Matthieu Ricard

Summary: from surviving to thriving Presence Trust Values Culture Connectedness
