Why are Trauma Centers Important? Trauma centers provide necessary equipment, specialized resources, and a specially trained team to care for those with life-threatening or critical injuries Trauma is the leading cause of death in people under the age of 40 Level II centers provide definitive care to critically injured patients from the Emergency Department to the Intensive Care Unit to Rehabilitation 11
Highly Advanced Cardiovascular Technologies & Procedures Structural Heart (TAVR, TMVR, Septal Ablations, PFO closure, ASD closure, Balloon Valvuloplasty) Catheter based procedures focused on the structure of the heart. These cases used to require open heart surgery. Destination LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) Artificial heart for Advanced Heart Failure patients. This is their last chance at life. Adult ECMO program Last resort technology that saves patients in low cardiac output states, shock and sepsis for example. Heart and Lung machine that provides oxygenation as well as circulation. Convergent Ablations The patient has an ablation while undergoing open heart surgery Mechanical Circulatory Support, Impella Device Heart pump built into a catheter that increases cardiac output. Watchman Left Atrial Appendage Occluder Device implanted in the left atrium to prevent stroke in A-Fib patients by reducing the likelihood a clot can form. CardioMems implanted device to measure heart pressure to treat CHF patients before they are symptomatic and admitted. Complex PCI Patients that are not candidates for open heart that receive PCI as a last chance. Very successful but very complex. Frequently requires placement of an Impella to provide support during the case. Complex CTO Chronic total occlusion, cases where specially trained cardiologists open complete blockages by threading a wire through the tissue layers of the artery from both sides. Rotational Atherectomy Technique using a spinning drill type device to open a closed artery. Only performed by specially trained physicians. High risk but life changing. 12
