President s Letter Dear Dulaney Community: We hope you and your families are enjoying the cooler weather (and cooler classrooms), adjusting to Schoology and to toting devices around, and looking forward to nice plans for the Thanksgiving holiday. But before it arrives, we have American Education Week coming right up! Although visitors are welcome all week, the designated visiting day for Dulaney is November 14. I strongly encourage you to visit for any part of that day if you can, even though your students will almost certainly be unenthusiastic about the idea. Your presence demonstrates your interest to both students and faculty, and gives you a chance to see the building for yourself. Seeing what our faculty and students achieve in spite of our aging and inadequate facilities is pretty inspiring. And, as the mother of two Dulaney alums now in college, I can tell you that before you know it, in the blink of any eye, your opportunity to visit your kids' high school classrooms will be just a memory in the rear-view mirror of life. So come on in! If you do, please join us in the morning for Breakfast with the Principal, hosted by the PTSA in the library classroom. It's a great opportunity to speak with Mr. Wynkoop, and faculty members often stop by as well. Many thanks to all of you who supported our sale of Dulaney spirit wear and car magnets, coordinated by our wonderful PTSA officer and Spirit Wear Chair, Kathy Wong! We appreciate the enthusiastic response and will use the small portion of proceeds we receive to continue to make things better for Dulaney's students, faculty, and staff. If you missed this sale, keep an eye out for the next one; we plan to do at least one more this school year. Thanks also to the folks who attended the first Answer Class SAT prep classes at Dulaney in September and October, and to our great new volunteer, Jyoti Mohan, for making all the necessary arrangements. Since this program is new, we are very interested in your feedback, so please feel free to get in touch with me or any PTSA officer or board member to share it with us. Students who are interested in signing up but missed those classes can register for one of the three upcoming sessions listed below, which have been scheduled to coordinate with the upcoming SAT dates. Mark your calendar! Answer Class Sessions at Dulaney SAT Date Sat., Feb. 9 from 9 am - 5:30 pm March 9 M/W April 1 & 3 from 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm May 4 Sat., May 18 from 9 am - 5:30 pm June 1 And of course, many thanks to all of you who have joined and donated to the PTSA. And a quick note to anyone who has sent in a check with a student for the PTSA or the Grad Gala: If your check doesn t clear promptly, you may want to dig around in the bottom of their backpack. Again this year, it s clear that some checks are hanging around awhile before finding their way to us. Finally, we still need your help to reach our fundraising target. Our goal this year is to reach a total of $17,000 in Lions Share donations, and we're not there yet, so please help if you can. Here's the link to donate: Donation Page 2018-2019 v3 Counting our Dulaney blessings this month, Sue Battle-McDonald PTSA President suebattle@yahoo.com

CLASS OF 2019 DULANEY HIGH SCHOOL GRAD GALA Dear Dulaney Parents, Guardians & Friends of Dulaney, On Saturday, May 18, 2019 the class of 2019 will hold it's senior prom, to be followed by the after prom event, known as the Grad Gala. The Grad Gala is an off-campus, alcohol & drug free event. It is FREE to all seniors and guests, even if they do not attend the senior prom. It draws more than 500 attendees each year and is a fun and safe event for after prom. In order to make Grad Gala 2019 an unforgettable experience, we need your help! The cost of the event is usually over $25,000. The funds for this event are raised through donations from our business community. The largest portion of the money, however, comes from donations made by families and friends of Dulaney. This includes families of all grades. Please consider making a $50 donation or any amount you feel comfortable with, to support this event. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and the key to making our 2019 Grad Gala a fun and safe alternative for our seniors. Current PTSA Volunteer Opportunities For more information about any of these, contact PTSA Volunteer Coordinator Dawn Stellman or PTSA President Sue Battle-McDonald. 1. Help us form a new "Devices in Schools" committee to follow issues associated with the assigned BCPS devices, and also to consider related issues such as health implications, research relating to device usage for education, and options for limiting cellphone usage during the school day. 2. These committees have chairs who can use help: Beautification - gardening and sprucing up the school grounds Reflections - short-term need for judges, I think in Jan or Feb Hospitality - bring food and other items for, and/or helping at, events at school - mostly for teacher/staff events - great fun to stay and see how happy the free food makes them :) Advocacy - many opportunities depending on your areas of interest Prevention Partners - grant-funded substance abuse prevention activities 3. Serve as Dulaney's liaison to the Maryland PTA and the Baltimore County PTA Council. 4. A number of national organizations offer resources and programs that we would love to bring to Dulaney; we just need volunteers to take the lead. Three examples are below; you may find others that interest you: Help prevent Nature Deficit Disorder! Lead Dulaney in developing green schoolyard spaces. https://www.childrenandnature.org/initiatives/schoolyards/what-is-a-green-schoolyard/ Sandy Hook Promise - to prevent gun violence - Dulaney needs a "Promise Leader" https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/promise_leaders We need a coordinator for Youth Mental Health Matters Week in the spring. This is a great Maryland program, and school coordinators, called "Champions", are needed. https://www.childrensmentalhealthmatters.org/school-champions/

Student Support Network, Inc. 1740 E. Joppa Rd, Suite 200 Baltimore, MD 21234 www.studentsupportnetwork.org/ The Student Support Network improves the lives of Baltimore County students in poverty by providing food, other basic necessities, and advocacy support. The Student Support Network began as the Loch Raven Network, a holiday project created by Laurie Taylor-Mitchell in December of 2015 to assist students at Loch Raven High School in Baltimore County. A request for 4 volunteers to help 5 students and families, either homeless or in dire need, led to 17 days of donations before the project ended on Dec. 20. In that time, 128 volunteers donated food baskets, hundreds of gifts, winter clothing, sheets and blankets, and over $6000 in monetary donations for 25 families. The Loch Raven Network became a non-profit (501c3) organization in October of 2016. The change to the Student Support Network resulted from the growth to programs now operating in three schools: Loch Raven High School, Parkville High School, and Pine Grove Middle School. The Student Support Network receives assistance from local churches, businesses, community groups, foundations, and individual volunteers who have donated funds, inkind donations, and their time to the Network.
