2 Central Florida FICPA Newsletter Fall 2016 FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS The FICPA Vision The Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants is the premier professional organization representing Florida's Certified Public Accountants. The FICPA Mission We serve the diverse needs of our members; enhance their competency and professionalism; support professional standards; promote the value of our members and advocate on behalf of the profession. A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR It s hard to believe that the summer season is over and we are only a few months away from finishing yet another year. This year has posed challenges and opportunities for our profession. As members of the FICPA, you can always count that we are advocating for the progress of all CPAs in Florida and more specifically, that our local chapter continues to work in order to maintain relevance during these times. A few months ago, we invited the YCPAs to attend a chocolate factory social (pg.9) and plans are underway for our upcoming YCPA/Young Attorneys Mixer on October 12th (pg. 10). These events are prime examples of our continuing efforts to meet our goal of engaging YCPAs in our organization. We are also getting ready for our Student Field Day on November 11th, where we invite accounting firms and companies to share with accounting major students the opportunities they have as CPAs. Just like we did last year, we plan to offer speed networking so that our more experienced CPAs can offer valuable advice to those students who are planning on starting their careers in accounting very soon. Furthermore, we continue to offer high quality CPE classes. Our members have various opportunities to

3 Central Florida FICPA Newsletter Fall 2016 learn from peers and experts in different industries while also networking and meeting their CPE requirements. We continue our efforts through our various committees including Financial Literacy, Legislation and Membership. I share all of this in hopes that you take advantage of your membership by either attending or volunteering at our different events or by being part of one of our committees. Our chapter is as strong and relevant as ever and your support is always appreciated. If you have not gotten a chance to connect with our organization, I invite you to e-mail me at kvergara@hbifflorida.org. I would love to meet with you and share personally the many benefits the FICPA provides to our members and how you can get involved. Wishing you continued success, Karen Vergara FICPA Central Florida Chapter Chair, 2016-2017

8 Central Florida FICPA Newsletter Fall 2016 FINANCIAL LITERACY TASK FORCE UPDATE If you are aware of the rising financial debt of not only the United States of America, but the individuals that make up this country, you know that this has been a problem for longer than we care to acknowledge. Bad credit, large credit card and student loan balances, overextended families, and stress are as common as the cold. So who better to educate our young people and even adults than the trusted experts CPAs? The financial literacy program at the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants has been around for years and we have had a great opportunity to expand that program in our Central Florida community over the past four years. The program is simple and easy to take out to any school, community partner, library or any other place where this information is needed. The program consists of 5 modules: Module 1 Three Keys to Financial Success Module 2 - Budgeting and Spending Module 3 Savings and Investing Module 4 Managing Debt Module 5 Protecting your Assets These modules consist of not only PowerPoint slides for you to present to the group, but several real-life examples and exercises that you can work on during your session. These modules can be presented in their entirety or tailored specifically for your audience. So how do you get started? I am so glad you asked. Sign up as a volunteer with the chapter s Financial Literacy Committee. If you are not comfortable speaking alone, you will be paired up with one of our volunteers or if you are ready to hit the ground running, we can get you working as soon as your schedule permits. We are just beginning our planning for the upcoming year and would greatly appreciate your participation in this community outreach. If you would like to help, contact Tarsha R. Jacobs at Tarsha@trjacobscpa.com. Tarsha R. Jacobs, CPA Chair, Financial Literacy Committee

9 Central Florida FICPA Newsletter Fall 2016 SOCIAL AT FARRIS AND FOSTER S CHOCOLATE FACTORY Before the summer began, our YCPAs and accounting major students participated in a social at Farris and Foster's Chocolate Factory. They had a great time networking and making chocolate. Not only did they have a chance to make their own chocolate and take their delicacies home, but they met new friends and colleagues in a fun environment. We hope you can join us at our next social event! (Details on bottom of next page)
