AUSTRALIANS ARE SEARCHING ONLINE FOR HEALTH INFORMATION There is an increasing desire amongst Australians to find health information online. Each week in Australia, more than 12 million people search the internet for health and medical information, yet 78% of these visits land on overseas websites where there is no guarantee that the information is clinically sound or appropriate to the Australian health system.* www.webmd.com is the highest rating health advice website in the world with estimated monthly visits of approximately 60 million 1.5 million of these come from Australia.** Almost 40% of Australians look for health information for self-treatment online.*** Over 60% of Australians visiting the healthdirect website are using either a smart mobile or tablet device. 66% of Australians who seek advice through the healthdirect Symptom Checker do so through a mobile device. INTRODUCING THE HEALTHDIRECT APP The healthdirect app combines three trusted tools to help Australians make health decisions safely, quickly and easily. Users can check symptoms, find a health service or search for trusted health information at the touch of a button. There is no other Australian app that offers this unique combination of tools. SYMPTOM CHECKING CAPABILITY The healthdirect app includes a symptom checker tool which guides people through a set of questions to help them better understand their symptoms and receive personalised advice on what to do next, whether it is self-care or seeing a health professional. FIND A HEALTH SERVICE The healthdirect app puts the most comprehensive directory of Australian health services at people s fingertips. Results are based on a person s location, allowing them to find the closest service that meets their needs and the directions to reach it. SEARCH FOR TRUSTED INFORMATION All health information in the healthdirect app is sourced from Australia s leading health organisations and has undergone a quality assurance process to ensure the information is safe, appropriate and relevant for Australians. It also complies with Healthdirect Australia s Clinical Governance Framework. A HELPING HAND IN EMERGENCIES The healthdirect app can be used in emergency situations. It will display latitude and longitude coordinates which can be relayed to emergency service operators, especially in situations where people may be in an unfamiliar place or a remote location with no obvious landmarks. 9 Healthdirect Australia

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT Health professionals are increasingly experiencing patients who are obtaining their own health advice online. We are informing health professionals about healthdirect so you can guide patients to a safe and relevant source of health information. We will exhibit at a number of trade conferences and events throughout the year and will use these opportunities to showcase the features of the app to the healthcare services sector. In October 2015, the launch of the healthdirect app will be supported by a consumer campaign consisting of outreach to traditional and online media outlets as well as a digital marketing campaign. It is vital that we communicate directly to consumers to ensure that they know where to access information online that is safe, reliable and trustworthy.
