Tobacco Ms. Schafer

The Facts About Tobacco Tobacco is a Stimulant Tobacco is the number 1 cause of preventable death in the United States. The government requires all tobacco products to carry warning labels.

What products contain tobacco? Cigarettes Cigars and pipes Hookah Smokeless tobacco (aka. Dip, Chew, Snuff)

3 Main Components of Smoke Nicotine- The addictive drug found in tobacco leaves. Tar- Thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns. Damages alveoli in lungs, Carcinogen. Carbon Monoxide- Colorless, odorless and poisonous gass that is taken up more readily by the blood than oxygen. Reduces red blood cell capacity to carry oxygen; related to CVD

Other Chemicals in Tobacco Cigarettes contain 43 known carcinogens Some of the carcinogens include cyanide, formaldehyde, arsenic and other poisonous chemicals used in insecticides, paint, toilet cleaners, antifreeze and explosives.

Types of Smoke Mainstream Smoke-The smoke exhaled by the lungs of a smoker Sidestream Smoke- The smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar. More dangerous than mainstream because of higher concentrations of carcinogens, nicotine, and tar. Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)- Secondhand smoke is air that has been contaminated by tobacco smoke.

Short Term Effects of Smoke Tobacco Changes in brain chemistry- that can cause nervousness, headaches Increased Respiration and Heart Ratebreathing during physical activity become more difficult, nicotine way cause an irregular heart rate. Dulled Taste Buds and Reduced Appetite Bad Breath, Smelly Hair, clothes, and Skin

Long Term Effects of Smoke Tobacco Immune system is weakened Chronic Bronchitis-Tar destroys cilia causing chronic coughing and excessive mucus secretion Emphysema- Air sacks destroyed making it more difficult for the lungs to absorb oxygen. Advanced Emphysema requires you to use 80% of your energy just to breath. Lung Cancer Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke

Non-Smoker Vs. Smoker

Lets not forget the cosmetic concerns! Premature skin wrinkling Premature baldness Discolored fingers Persistent tobacco odor Stained yellow teeth Hairy tongue

Smokeless Tobacco Contains nicotine and 28 known carcinogens Absorbed through the mucus membranes of the mouth and digestive tract. Oral cancer risk increases by 50X Leukoplakia- Precancerous patches, many appear after short time of use

Extreme Effects of Smokeless Tobacco Rick Bender, Formerly a baseball player with the California Angels. After using smokeless tobacco for 12 years, Bender had 4 operations for undifferentiated squamous call carcinoma at the ages of 26 and 27. Cancer destroyed his jaw severely damaged his mouth, teeth, tongue, neck, and arm muscles.

Leukoplakia Oral Cancer

Hookah There is myth that smoking hookah is safer than cigarettes because hookah smoke is filtered through bubbling water. Reality check guys!! That water is just used to cool the smoke and make it more smooth. Recent studies show that hookah smokers actually inhale more nicotine than do cigarette smokers because of the massive volume of smoke that is inhaled. In general a person who smokes hookah daily absorbs as much nicotine as someone who smoke 10 cigarettes a day!

E Cigs E Cigs contain nicotine making them addictive. If a user stops they can get withdrawal symptoms just like cigarette smokers, including feeling irritable, depressed, restless and anxious. They do not endanger the public as much because of the elimination of the sidestream smoke(burning end of the cigarette) however they still give off some dangerous chemicals. Some supporters say that they can help smokers quit smoking, just like nicotine gum, but research has not shown this to be true yet. A big worry is that this product could make smoking popular again. "E-cigarettes may be less harmful than cigarettes," M. Brad Drummond, MD. says. "But we still don't know enough about their long-term risks or the effects of secondhand exposure.

But there is good news According to the American Lung Association, since the public has become more aware of the risks of tobacco use, more individuals are making the choice to be tobacco free!

And I hope you do too!
