The Cultural Coordinator along with countless volunteers contributed in so many ways. She also thanked Verona High School for providing a venue for this function. However, every year generous and dedicated volunteers around the nation clean and keep litter free highways for all to enjoy. Since 2003 the Association of Indians in America in Madison has taken responsibility for cleaning a portion of highway 14 W with the stretch of one and a half miles from CTH MM (Oregon, WI) to the Byrne Road Bridge. The cleaning is done three times a year between May and October. This year the first spring cleaning was done on Sunday, May 29, 2011. Volunteers gathered at Swaminathan Balachandran s house for breakfast at 9 a.m. The new volunteers were given a short orientation along with WI DOT video about the activity for 10 minutes. All volunteers received

instructions from Balachandran, divided into three groups, picked up vest and gloves, and proceeded to the work site at about 10 a.m. and the work was complete in about an hour. A total of 13 bags of trash were collected in this cleanup. The next highway cleaning will be in July. BE A PROUD INDIAN @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The 2011 highway cleaning schedule has come out. The AIA of Madison has adopted 1.5.miles of 14W from CTH MM (Oregon, WI) to the Byrne Road Bridge to keep it clean throughout the year. Dr. Swaminathan and Lalitha Balachandran have coordinated this program for the last 8 years. It has been the tradition that volunteers gather in Dr. Balachandran s house and have breakfast and proceed to the cleanup work. The work takes about an hour and a number of garbage bags full of trash are collected on the road side. A city crew picks up after the clean up work is done. Every year, 40 to 50 volunteers clean the assigned areas 3 times a year in spring, summer, and fall. The highway section to be cleaned starts from the sign and ends at the Optimist Club sign. Only the right-hand-side of that section has to be cleaned and the left side is cleaned by other organizations The next cleaning will be in July. If it rains on that day, the activity will be rescheduled to a different date. Volunteers are encouraged to contact Dr. Bala at balachas@uwplatt.edu or 608-848-6780.
