FUN FOOD FACTS Pomegrantes are one of the healthiest fruits you can eat. Extremely high in antioxidants, pomegrantes can be added to appetizers, salads, soups, desserts and even main courses. Chef Paul s Everyday Cooking Planning to attend holiday parties this season? Here are some tips to prevent overeating this time of year Avoid Holiday Goodies in Excess It s too easy to overeat during the holidays. Festive parties, family gatherings and neighborhood gatherings can lead to overeating, discomfort and added calories. Here are a few tips to help you avoid over-indulging while still enjoying the holiday fun and great tastes. Have a Plan: Bring healthy, low calorie snacks like fruit to work with you to avoid snacking on high-fat treats brought in by co-workers. Drink Water: Have a glass of water before a holiday party or meal to help you feel full and reduce overeating. Drinking water throughout the day will keep you feeling full, making it less liekly that you will reach for excess goodies. Portion Control: Choose moderate portions of only the foods you like best during a buffet meal, and only eat some of the dessert rather than all of it. Do not worry about hurting the cook s feelings; if you really feel bad about not trying something, just place a small portion on your plate. Eat Slowly: Take your time and savour the meal. Eating fast can lead to overeating and discomfort. It takes time for your body to tell your brain that you ve reached a full state. Be mindful of what you are eating and enjoy it without eating too much, too fast. Don t Skip Meals: It s never a good idea to skip a meal. Waiting to eat will trigger the starving reflex in your body, causing you to overeat. Focus on Conversation: The holidays are all about sharing good times with friends and family. Taking the focus off the food can discourage you from eating when you are not eating. 3

CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU! Dark choclate can reduce the risk of stroke, diabetes and protect against blood inflammation. There are many reasons to enjoy chocolate during the holidays, but did you ever think it could help you live longer? Live Longer Eat Dark Chocolate There are many benefits of eating dark chocolate, but did you know it can help you live longer? Chocolate tends to have a bad reputation as junk food because of all the added sugar and fat in highly processed chocolate bars. However, scientific studies have shown that dark chocolate is good for your health. Savour the Flavour Don t feel guilty this holiday season if given dark chocolate as a gift, savour the flavour and feel confident knowing that you are taking care of your health with every bite of dark chocolate. Brain Food A 2008 Harvard study invited subjects to spend two weeks of enhanced chocolate intake, which led scientists to conclude that an increase in chocolate consumption can lead to more blood to your brain. 5 Indulge in Comfort Food Chocolate has the ability to sooth sadness and stress, and miraculously make us feel better thanks to flavonoids. The average commercial dark chocolate contains about 60 % cocao and has been found to contain 536 milligrams of flavonoids per 1.4-ounce serving. Research has shown that as few as 80 milligrams of flavonoids a day can lower blood pressure. Live Longer Jeanne Louise Calment, the oldest known person, lived to the age of 122 and she enjoyed a couple pounds of chocolate each week. Anti-oxidant rich chocolate can be good for you, but don t over do it. Everything in moderation! So enjoy dark chocolate this holiday season!
