Support Network at Penn National Neighbors who care...and help. Annual Report January 1 December 31, 2017 Support Network at Penn National Providing services and support through an extensive network of volunteers and preferred providers and access to essential educational and informational resources, thereby enabling members to maintain the quality of their lives and enjoy the advantages of living in a caring community.

From the President 2017 was a another busy year of services provided by our Executive Director, our volunteers and preferred providers. We welcomed a number of new members and said good-bye to members who have moved out of Penn National. We will miss our members and friends who passed away this year. SNaP continues to have an excellent rate of members renewing each year. There were many programs and events that captured the interest of our members and Penn National residents. We held our yearly pancake breakfast and we took a day trip to visit a local alpaca farm. We also enjoyed a performance at the Totem Pole Playhouse and a meet-and-greet reception afterwards. In December 2017, Donna Crissman, who took SNaP from infancy to our tenth year of existence, submitted her letter of resignation as Executive Director of SNaP. Reluctantly, the Board accepted. In March 2018, Patricia Vrabel was hired as the Executive Director. Patricia has excellent credentials and will be taking over beginning mid-april. I would like to thank our Executive Director, Donna Crissman, for her dedicated service to the members of SNaP and the community over the last 10 years, and for her tireless efforts toward achieving the goals of the organization. I would like to thank the Board of Trustees, our members and our volunteers for working together to help SNaP achieve and exceed our goals, Jay Hunter, President Support Network at Penn National 2017 SNaP Officers Jay Hunter, President Roland Foster, Vice President and Web Master Rosina Saitta, Secretary James Hilmer, Treasurer Trustees Donald Gracyalny Susan Pape Robert Schaefer, Jr. Donald Schleef Past Presidents Alvin Poppen Richard Kiel Donald Weber Marilyn Ross Roland Foster Donna Crissman, Executive Director

Memberships and Renewals At the close of 2017, member households totaled 150. Several new residents of Penn National have chosen to join SNaP after moving into their homes, allowing them to take advantage of services and benefits immediately and begin to build relationships with other SNaP members and the community. Established residents are joining SNaP because they need some help every so often with home maintenance and transportation or with everyday living. General Membership $250 Single Resident Membership $200 Supported Membership $150 Our membership fees per household remain considerably lower than those of similar organizations nationwide. Our fees are per household, for one year from the date enrolled. SNaP fees have remained unchanged since 2008, thanks, in part, to new memberships and renewals. With increased membership and the continued high rate of renewals, SNaP has continually demonstrated value to the community, and the services offered have made a difference in the lives of our members and our community. However, with each passing year, members sell their homes and move to other communities to be closer to their children, enter local retirement homes, or pass on to the next life, keeping our membership total about the same, even with new memberships. In order for SNaP to continue as a viable entity in Penn National, our membership fees and volunteer pool need to increase. Thus, membership fees will increase by $50 on July 1, 2018. Become a Volunteer Volunteers are the heart of the Support Network at Penn National. They give their time and talent freely and respond to every request. SNaP could not exist without them. Thank you to all our volunteers; you make a difference in the lives of others. Help others by becoming a volunteer today. Some future volunteer may do the same for you. SNaP can always use additional drivers, especially during the summer when many are out on the golf course or during the winter months when many head for the sun. If you wish to become a volunteer, fill out the Volunteer Interest Form on the SNaP website at www.snapn.org. Click on the Volunteers tab and select the Volunteer Interest Form. Click on the Submit button when finished. You should get a call from the Executive Director when the form is received.

SNaP By the Numbers SNaP membership totals 150 households. The organization operates with 1 full-time employee who manages the day-to-day operations of the organization and keeps the office running smoothly. SNaP has 58 volunteers and 83 preferred providers who meet the needs of members requesting services. Other 2017 statistics include: 13 new memberships 7 newsletters published 26 get well, sympathy, or thank you cards sent Programs and Fundraisers SNaP offers, co-sponsors, supports, or highlights programs and events in our local area and makes information and other services available to members and the community via SNaP s newsletters, email messages, and the web site. In 2017, SNaP held several social and educational events designed to inform, enrich lives, and strengthen friendships. Our fundraisers were very successful because of member and community support. 6 You Call We Respond The information that follows reflects the diversity of requests to which the volunteers, preferred providers, and the Executive Director responded. In 2017, the SNaP office recorded 314 telephone requests for services. While a majority of the requests were for transportation and home maintenance, personal services and computer assistance requests increased. Two scheduled requests for caregiver relief were eventually canceled. The Information category refers to calls the Executive Director was able to take care of with a referral or general information. The Other category refers to calls that did not fall into a specific category, but required a response by the Executive Director. Usually these requests were inquiries from non-members or persons outside the community. Home Maintenance is the most requested service with 40 percent of the calls. Transportation is the second most requested service with 29 percent of the calls. Information and referral requests accounted for 16 percent of the calls. Computer Assistance and Personal Services each at 7 percent of the calls.

How We Helped Of the 314 service requests, 68 were responded to by preferred providers and 246 by volunteers and the Executive Director The Executive Director provided information to local residents about SNaP and talked with local business owners who eventually became preferred providers. Volunteers made 90 round trips to transport members to various appointments and assisted members a total of 126 times with home maintenance, 22 times with computer and other technology problems, and 22 times for personal services. They assisted members in a wide variety of ways, often responding to requests immediately or within 30 minutes. Our competent volunteers performed the following specific tasks, which sometimes involved complicated computer, printer, or email problems. They reinstalled printer software, provided Access program installation and education, transferred files to a new computer and offered software education. Other issues that were resolved included reprogramming outside lights, replacing a door bell, replacing smoke detectors, replacing a sensor on a lamp post, and repairing a screen door. In addition, volunteers aligned a shower door, installed a grab bar, replaced a dimmer switch, balanced checkbooks and paid bills, and more. Strong Bond Between Member and Volunteer Not reflected in our requests for service, but worth a special mention here again this year, is that a volunteer continues the regular schedule set up in 2016 with a non-driving member to meet all transportation needs. A weekly date was set and trips were combined when possible for medical appointments, grocery shopping, vet visits, and other personal services. 170 dedicated hours were spent in 2017 by one volunteer for one member. This arrangement works very well and makes a difference in the lives of both the member and the volunteer. Weekly Needs Met in 2017 Our sincere thanks to all of our volunteers who are so generous with their time and talents.

How We Helped (continued) Preferred Providers responded to 68 requests that required their specialized skills. They inspected and repaired roofs, repaired or replaced appliances, replaced faucets, painted, repaired garage doors, cleaned gutters, power washed porches and siding, planted shrubs, replaced lattice work around a deck, helped move exercise equipment out of a home, unclogged drains, replaced a gasket around a stove, installed new hardwood flooring, replaced carpeting, replaced roof shingles, replaced eight smoke alarms, and performed regular plumbing and heating maintenance. In addition, preferred providers replaced a chandelier, detailed vehicles, and modified a shower and removed a bathtub. Thanks to our local businesses who responded to our needs in a timely manner, completed the requests, and provided the services at reasonable costs. Contributions The SNaP Board of Trustees, Executive Director, and members thank the following individuals and businesses for their generous contributions to SNaP during the year and to the Annual Fund.
