Addiction is a stress induced, genetically mediated, primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. The good news is that behavioral therapies and medications can help addicted individuals repair their damaged self control capacities, as long as they actively participate in treatment. 21 7
