Volume 12 Issue 45 24 June, 2013 Matt s Message (a word from Kew on Yarra President Matt Pollard) Rotary Year 2012 2013 President: Vice President: Hon Secretary: Hon Treasurer: President Elect: Matt Pollard Ed Brown Irene Leung John Pocock Bob Lambert Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka District Governor Dennis Shore Assistant Governor Bob Slater Club Avenues of Service International: Community: Club Service: Foundation: New Generation: Vocational: Club Protection Off: Bulletin Editor: Tony Boyd William Liew David Shave Bob Lambert Anne Brown Justin Wibrow John Orr PLEASE REMEMBER Frank Jahnke Apologies and guests to Irene Leung by Tuesday on 0415 587 088 We had 100% of members attend on Wednesday which I am taking as a positive sign about how our Club is travelling. Sadly, for me, this means I will again be shouting drinks for an upcoming meeting! It was terrific to hear from Anemone about her year as a Rotary exchange student and on behalf of the three sponsoring Clubs, I presented her with an Akubra hat as lasting reminder of her time in Australia. She has been an exemplar for the Rotary exchange program and we wish her well for the future. She will be at our Changeover Dinner on 3 July and returns to Denmark on 5 July. We had good fellowship after Anemone s presentation and Mark Miller s rendition of some of A B Banjo Paterson s classic Australian bush poetry well done Mark. Isabel reported on a Donations In Kind working bee to load hospital beds into a container for dispatch to developing countries. Help is needed at The Alfred Hospital on 29 June. Contact Isabel or DIK for details if you can help. Next week s meeting will have depleted numbers as a number of member s are attending the Changeover Dinner for RC Kew that evening. Our meeting at the Amora will proceed and David Chivers will deliver a Member behind the Badge presentation. A number of members are attending RC Woodend Changeover this Friday evening it is great to see such solid support for our sister club. We had a board meeting after the regular meeting and passed a resolution that a recommendation be put to members to consider changing our club name to Yarra Bend Rotary. This will now be put before members at our next Forum for a decision and the process of seeking District and RI approvals would follow. The board also decided to fund a further mobile water purification facility through Disaster Aid Australia and to direct the funds raised at our recent Bunnings BBQ to the local Bridges2Employment project. Finally, I am delighted to report that the board approved the application for membership from Jane Stott who will be inducted at the meeting following our Changeover Dinner. Congratulations Jane and welcome! Cheers Matt. Club Forum Mark Miller gave us a couple of renditions of Banjo Patterson poems Clancy of the Overflow and The Man from Iron Bark reciting poetry is somewhat of a lost art nowadays pity...as Mark s performance showed it can be quite entertaining. Members moment Anemone Kirk attempted the impossible fitting her 12 months experience into a five minute talk. She chose to reflect on the differences she observed between Australia and her home country including: Footy ie Aussie Rules No such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing Our houses aren t well insulated Referring to teachers formally as Mr.or Mrs. School uniforms School shoes, not just gum boots Every house has biscuits somewhere, Seems Irene has On a more serious note, Anemone has had a fantastic experience overall, made all the more valuable by the many different people she has met from all walks of life. Sincere thanks to all her Rotary friends from Anemone and for our part, Anemone has been an outstanding ambassador for Rotary Exchange. Thought of the day Ed Brown- A young seaman who encountered bad weather while on watch aboard a battleship noticed a light to starboard signaling alter course 20 degrees. Being on a battleship, the largest in the fleet, he signaled back you alter course 20 degrees. When the same message came back he signaled you alter course, we are a battleship. He was startled when the response came back, alter course 20 degrees, we are a lighthouse.so beware things aren t not always what they seem!
