Dear Friends, With the increased life span of human beings, there is the predominance of chronic diseases. This needs an urgent intervention of holistic approach, including life style, diet and drug. Interestingly, this combination is best available in Ayurveda, an Indian system of Medicine, which reduces the huge financial burden and also avoids the side effects of conventional medicine. It can be used as add-on therapy or as preventive therapy or as complete replacement of existing modern therapy. However, it needs to be reexamined with modern scientific perspective with an aim to revalidate the ancient claims and also to provide safe and secure standard herbal product, free from all kinds of contaminations and adulterations. This International seminar is a modest effort to bring resource persons from the fields of science, medicine and Ayurveda on one platform to achieve the above goal. The focus will be on chronic diseases, especially on the metabolic syndrome, neural diseases, bone disorders, women s health and cancer. Last year, we had the 1 st annual meeting of the International Society for Ayurveda & Health (ISAH), at UCon School of Medicine, Connecticut, USA, where it was realized to have the 2 nd meeting at BHU in India, a premier organization for Ayurveda. This meeting, on the one hand, will help in preserving the principles and practices of Ayurveda to the doctors, who are using this system with limited understanding and on the other hand, will develop a bridge between basic scientists and doctors of both the systems. Besides, there shall be three training programs on special techniques of ayurveda (Yoga, Punchkarma, Ksharsutra) and one for modern laboratory techniques related to molecular biology and bioinformatics, with an objective to utilize the expertise of the participating resource persons in transferring technology to the youngsters. Further, the site visits to Ayurvedic OPD and hospital, ayurvedic garden and research laboratories in BHU will be of great educational importance. We have also organized a cultural program of classical music and dance. As regards to cultural exchange, a tour of Sarnath, the place of Lord Buddha and visit to the lanes and ghats of Varanasi with traditional culture of Kashi, the oldest living city on the earth and dome of dancing Lord Shiva; have been organized, which will add to the pleasure of the participants and their accompanied members. The participants will also enjoy to visit the factories and outlets of hand-woven Banarasi Silk Sarees and woolen carpets. Faculty of Ayurveda, BHU was established in 1926 and has a strong legacy of ayurvedic, yogic and Vedic knowledge. We have taken all precautions to have both, scientific and cultural exchange between East and West. You are all cordially invited to participate in this grand event.
