TO PROVIDE THE VERY BEST CARE FOR EACH PATIENT ON EVERY OCCASION Wrist Supports An information guide

Wrist Supports What is this leaflet about and who is it for? This leaflet is produced for people who have been provided with a wrist support by the Orthotics service. It will explain how you should care for the wrist support and other important information about the Orthotics service. We hope you find this information useful. If you require further information or are unable to attend an appointment, please telephone the Orthotics department where the appointment has been made for you as soon as possible: Rochdale: 01706 517055 Oldham: 0161 627 8890 North Manchester: 0161 720 2164 Bury: 0161 778 2847 What does the wrist support do? A wrist support is provided to immobilise the wrist and allow the joint to be rested, thereby easing pain or discomfort associated with normal/ over use. It also acts as a light brace, to protect the wrist when lifting objects. The support does not interfere with the movements of the fingers so does not significantly reduce hand function. 2

What is my entitlement? You are entitled to one wrist support or to a pair if both wrists are affected. A second support or pair will only be provided if: it is required long term the original is deemed to be clinically ineffective you are unable to function without it the original wrist support is beyond repair. Theft, loss or damage of the wrist support If the wrist support is stolen you will need to obtain a crime number from the police before we are able to order a replacement. If your wrist support is lost or damaged (either accidentally or maliciously) you will be asked to pay for its replacement. The average cost of a replacement wrist support is 15. How should I wear the Wrist support? ensure all Velcro straps are unfastened position the moulded strip centrally on the palm side of the wrist ensuring that the contours of the strip match the contours of the wrist/hand fasten the strap which passes over the wrist area first fasten all remaining straps from the top (forearm) to the bottom (palm) ensuring all straps are fastened firmly but comfortably if your wrist support has an additional piece which protects the thumb it is easiest to leave the strap for this section fastened following initial application and effectively slide the thumb in and out when putting on or taking off the support. 3

How should I care for the wrist support? remove the shaped supporting strip from its pocket before washing the support the support can be washed in an automatic washing machine on a woollens cycle after washing, the support can be dried near a gentle heat source e.g. near a radiator. DO NOT TUMBLE DRY once dry, replace the shaped supporting strip back in its pocket you are responsible for looking after the wrist support and returning it for repair as and when necessary. What problems should I be aware of? If you notice any of the following, please contact the Orthotics department as soon as possible on the telephone number at the top of this leaflet: skin redness that doesn t fade after 15-20 minutes sores or blisters on the skin pain, irritation or rubbing any damage to the wrist support. 4

Further appointments You will not be given a follow-up appointment automatically. However, if you feel your condition has not improved, has worsened or you are experiencing problems with your wrist support, you can see the Orthotic Officer or Orthotist for a review appointment by telephoning the Orthotics department where you had your original appointment.
