Dissertation Title: First-Person Investigations of Consciousness Abstract: In my dissertation, I argue for the reliability of first-person methods, and use first-person experiments as a novel approach to philosophical problems. I argue that the main sources of error in making introspective judgements are attentional and conceptual. This provides criteria for distinguishing between reliable and unreliable introspective judgements. I use first-person experiments to show that distant things looking smaller cannot be explained by visual angle, hence providing support for a subjectivist account of size experience. I also use these methods to isolate the sense of self and a phenomenological candidate for the subject of experience. Committee: David Chalmers (chair), Frank Jackson, Declan Smithies, Daniel Stoljar. 1
