If the column recoded is marked for a particular variable the codes are listed below. SEER Summary Stage Codes 0 Insitu 1 Local 2 Regional/Direct extension 3 Regional/Nodes only 4 Regional/Direct extension & Nodes 5 Regional NOS 7 Distant/Systemic Disease 9 Unknown Although the codes are identical for SEER Summary Stage 1977 and 2000 the methodology for coding these variables is distinct. Please refer to SEER Staging Manuals SEER Summary Staging Guide and the SEER Summary Staging Manual 2000. Please note over the last two decades staging rules have changed much too often; not only from direct coded to derived; but also during the derived years, the Collaborative staging algorithm changed several versions. Use caution when analyzing diagnosis stage over time. In order to make it easier for researchers, FCDS has made the following changes to SEER Summary Stage 2000 and SEER Summary Stage 1977 variables. DX Years SEER Summary Stage 1977 NAACCR Item 760 SEER Summary Stage 2000 NAACCR Item 759 1981-2000 Direct coded or Derived* 2001-2003 Direct coded or Derived* 2004-2015 Derived* 2016+ Direct coded* Direct coded signifies that the stage was abstracted from the medical record. Derived signifies that the stage was derived using a computer algorithm. Variables Derived SS1977 Flag and/or Derived SS2000 Flag denote whether the stage variable was derived or direct coded. Age groups are in 5 year increments. (004=0-4, 009=5-9, 014=10-14, 019=15-19, 024=20-24,..., 085=85+, 999=Unknown)

In order to calculate the rates comparable* to those on the FCDS website you must include the following parameters: (SEER Summary Stage 2000 between 1 and 9 for diagnosis years >= 2001) or (SEER Summary Stage 1977 between 1 and 9 for diagnosis years < 2001) or FCDS Site group = 55 *The counts will never match exactly as the information contained on this CD is the latest information available and the rates are calculated from a static database that is never reclosed or updated. If your counts and frequencies match those in the frequencies tables included then you have read the data in correctly.
