From the Editor Dear Colleagues, The first half of the year is full of dramas, the historical meeting between Trump and Kim in June, tariffs between the US and China, Croatia entered the semi-final of World cup... It seems that such occurrences are remote from us, especially Hong Kong cardiologist. However, it might affect our heart health directly and indirectly. For example, atrial fibrillation and mental stress might be related, although the scientific data is inconclusive. HKCC have organized "AF Screening and Awareness Campaign" in April. It would certainly help the early detection of AF and subsequent successful treatment. The other important event jointly organized by (HKCC) & Hong Kong Public Hospital Cardiologists Association (HKPHCA) was "Hong Kong Core Cardiology Certificate Course" on 8 July, with the aim to enhance the core cardiology knowledge and skill in day-to-day clinical practice. The feedbacks of this new event will be updated in the next newsletter. I would like to congratulate Dr. YUEN Sze Man from North District Hospital. She has been awarded Dr. C O Pun and Dr. Mary B L Kwong Scholarship /2019. She will receive further training in electrophysiology study in Korea. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. CHAN Leung Kwai, Jason for sharing his life in Montreal, Canada during his overseas training. We are looking forward for a peaceful and fruitful 2 nd half of the. Happy Summer. Best Regards, Dr. CHENG Cheung Wah, Boron Co-Editor Dr. LEUNG Tat Chi, Godwin Co-Editor 1

Local Scientific Activities Hong Kong Core Cardiology Certificate Course, 8 July Background One of the most important missions of (HKCC) is to promote the training and standard of our cardiology professionals so as to translate into better clinical patient care. In view of the vast and tremendous explosions in knowledge with ever increasing new advances, it is becoming increasingly difficult for cardiologists and fellow trainees to stay abreast and keep up-to-date on core knowledge as well as new frontier technology. However, the prerequisite of top quality patient care depends highly on core clinical knowledge and experience. Therefore, HKCC determines to launch this first-of-itskind certificate training course. We are pleased to have Hong Kong Public Hospital Cardiologists Association (HKPHCA), which shares similar aims, to co-organize the course. Goal The goal of the course is for our cardiology professionals to enhance their core cardiology knowledge and skill in day-to-day clinical practice. The course will provide a comprehensive broad base and up-to-date review of clinical diseases and the management. Delegates will also learn from experienced cardiologists the pearls of wisdom. On completion of the 9 modules of certificate training over a 3-year period, delegates will acquire solid clinical knowledge to be highly competent for daily clinical challenges. Course Description The course will consist of 9 modules, each of one-day duration, over the period of 3 years. The preliminary content of the course will include General Cardiology, Coronary Artery Diseases, Valvular Heart Disease, Arrhythmia, Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy, Preventive Cardiology, Hypertension & Pulmonary Hypertension, Aortic Dissection, Pericardial Diseases, Systemic Diseases & Pregnancy-related Heart Diseases, etc. Approach to patients with symptoms like chest pain, cardiac murmur, shortness of breath, palpitation and syncope, will be addressed. Intelligent & appropriate use of investigations, tips & tricks in interventions and devices usage will be highlighted. The course will also review how to prepare for cardiology examinations. Target Participants All cardiologists in clinical practice will benefit from the course. Due to limited capacity to allow more interaction, cardiology fellows in training who are also members of HKCC/ HKPHCA will have priority for enrollment. 8 Certification A short examination will be held at the end of each module. Delegates passing the examination will get a certificate of that module. Upon completion and passing examination of at least 6 out of 9 modules, delegate will get a certificate for the Course. The theme of first module is "Coronary Artery Disease: What a Cardiologist Needs to Know in Daily Practice" and was held on 8 July at Salon 6, JW Marriot Ballroom (Level 3) at JW Marriot Hong Kong. The programme of the first module as below:

Local Scientific Activities Registration Cardiology member trainees followed by fellows of HKCC / HKPHCA were given priority for registration before 28 June. Registration fee of HKD200 per head per module would be charged (subject to availability). If delegate pass an exam of a module, his/her registration fee for the next module that he/she enrolls will be waived (i.e. not necessary the next module), subjected to successful enrollment under the limited seat capacity. Members Section Hong Kong Heart Foundation Cardiology Training Fellowship Programme Sharing from Dr. CHAN Leung Kwai, Jason (Hong Kong Heart Foundation Fellowship 2010/2011 at Montreal Heart Institute, Montreal, Canada) Finally, it s my chance to make the sharing! I felt encouraging and had much anticipation every time when I read this sharing column before my overseas training. Indeed, the overseas training is really a valuable experience that I will never forget. I had my overseas fellowship training specialize in congenital and structural heart intervention at Montreal Heart Institute, Montreal, Canada from 2011 to 2012. Montreal is a lovely city with a mixture of European and English culture, having a variety of outdoor activities. A unique city in Canada, people love making jokes all the time (the origin of TV comedy: Just for laughs: Gags). People pursuit high standard at work too. Montreal Heart Institute is the first to do percutaneous laser coronary dilatation; cryoablation in the world. It is the first to do TAVI, mitraclip, balloon aortic valvuloplasty, mitral valvuloplasty in Canada. My training mainly focused on all kinds of interventions in cardiology, from basic heart catheterizations, coronary angiogram and coronary interventions to congenital and structural heart interventions (ASD, VSD, PDA closure, LAAO, TAVI, mitraclip etc). Not only the procedure itself, we emphasized on the whole patient s care as well including the pre- and post- procedural management. The Institute is a francophone institute. That made a little challenge to me at the beginning as I needed to explain the procedure and risk to the patient in French (Québécois). Luckily, with the tolerance, helps from my colleagues, I handled it without any problem quickly. Being one of the intervention fellows, I needed to do the calls in both primary PCI and in-hospital ward call. The work was not leisure and I learned a lot from it. Not only the medical knowledge and skills but also the attitude to the patients. My highest record was 15 primary PCI during the weekend call, the pager rang just when I put my foot on the carpet outside the door of my apartment. I learned different kinds of structural heart intervention procedures with the first-inman devices like amulet for LAAO, the perimembranous VSD device during my training. I had chance to meet Dr. Amplatzer himself, one of the legends in congenital heart intervention. He was almost 90 years old, the inventor of the current ASD, PDA Amplatzer closure devices. He is still engaging in the intervention procedures nowadays! Driving in winter in Montreal is also a unique experience. Driving under -40 degrees Celsius is not a matter, driving under heavy snow is fun. Even with the special winter types, the car slides on the road no matter you press either the brake or the gas pedal. The only thing you can do is nothing, just let car shift slowly (It is also a good chance to practice drifting). Other than work, I also enjoyed the social life with the other fellows, nurses, residents and mentors. Fellows came from different parts of the world like Spain, France, Greece, Germany, Australia, England, Mexico, Argentina etc. and we had the same goal Work 27

Members Section hard, play hard!. We did poker night, canoe camping, snowboarding, dragon boat and many other activities when we were free. All these were valuable experience. At last, I need to give a special thanks to Hong Kong Heart Fellowship Programme. It helps bringing young doctors an opportunity to learn new stuffs, make new friends and give new contribution to Hong Kong. Hope this momentum will last forever to all the comers.
