Fundraising inspiration
FebROWary Hello! Thank you so much for signing up to take part in The Great Row 2019 in support of Cancer Research UK. The money you raise will help to fund our life-saving research into preventing cancer, diagnosing the disease earlier and developing new and kinder treatments. Our vision at Cancer Research UK is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. In the 1970s, just 1 in 4 people in the UK survived cancer. Today, thanks to research, that figure has doubled but we can t stop there. Our ambition is to continue to accelerate this progress so that 3 in 4 people survive cancer for 10 years or more by the year 2034. By taking part in The Great Row, you are helping us achieve that ambition. We want you to have as much fun as possible with The Great Row, but also to raise a suggested minimum of 100 to help beat cancer. To get you started, we ve put together this fundraising pack of ideas, inspiration and useful information. We ll also send you some top tips from British Rowing to help you with your training, so you can smash through those miles and complete your marathon this FebROWary. Remember that we re here to support you every step of the way so if you have any questions, email them to TheGreatRow@cancer.org.uk. Guess the volume of a welly Ask your friends or colleagues to guess how much water you can fit inside a wellington boot! Ask for a suggested donation to enter and award a prize to whoever is closest. Donate a day s salary Would your manager or director be willing to donate a day s pay? This is a great way for them to get involved if they re too busy to come along to other activities. You just need games, a place and people who will pay to play. It can be as simple as Charades or if you have a screen and console to hand, why not go down the gaming route? You re helping to beat cancer Rhys s story Rhys was only four when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He had surgery to remove the tumour, but complications and infections meant he had to have five more surgical procedures. As part of his treatment, Rhys took part in a clinical trial funded by Cancer Research UK, which aims to increase survival for children and young people with low-grade glioma brain tumours that start in the glial cells, which support nerve cells in the brain. Rhys s mum Keely said: Lots of the children at school ask him about the scar running down the back of his head, but he takes it in his stride. He s a happy, affectionate, loveable boy and an inspiration to us all. And when his favourite toy monkey Geoff had a hole in his head, eight-year-old Rhys asked his granny to sew it up but wanted to make sure he had a scar, just like his. Good luck from of all of us at Cancer Research UK!
