FebROWary Hello! Thank you so much for signing up to take part in The Great Row 2019 in support of Cancer Research UK. The money you raise will help to fund our life-saving research into preventing cancer, diagnosing the disease earlier and developing new and kinder treatments. Our vision at Cancer Research UK is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. In the 1970s, just 1 in 4 people in the UK survived cancer. Today, thanks to research, that figure has doubled but we can t stop there. Our ambition is to continue to accelerate this progress so that 3 in 4 people survive cancer for 10 years or more by the year 2034. By taking part in The Great Row, you are helping us achieve that ambition. We want you to have as much fun as possible with The Great Row, but also to raise a suggested minimum of 100 to help beat cancer. To get you started, we ve put together this fundraising pack of ideas, inspiration and useful information. We ll also send you some top tips from British Rowing to help you with your training, so you can smash through those miles and complete your marathon this FebROWary. Remember that we re here to support you every step of the way so if you have any questions, email them to TheGreatRow@cancer.org.uk. Let s pull together The Great Row is not only a fantastic fitness challenge, but you re also doing something amazing and raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK s life-saving work. I m a huge supporter of this campaign not only because I love the sport, but also because the cause means a lot to me. I ll be rowing the miles alongside you this FebROWary, and you can follow my journey and get training tips and advice via my website and my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Just search Vicky Thornley and you ll find me! Thank you for taking part in this incredible challenge and raising lots of money for this great cause.. Vicky Thornley GB Olympic silver medallist & The Great Row Ambassador

Ready, set, fundraise! As well as the incredible number of miles you re going to row this FebROWary, we re challenging you to raise a minimum of 100 to fund life-saving research. Here are some ideas to help you get started Sweepstakes Everyone loves a sweepstake! We ve already made one for you. Visit cruk.org/thegreatrow Fancy dress Organise a fancy-dress day at work and ask colleagues to make a donation to take part. Set a theme and offer a prize for the most creative outfit. Bake sale Who doesn t love a good cake? Encourage your colleagues to bring in some homemade bakes and ask for a donation per sale. Guess the volume of a welly Ask your friends or colleagues to guess how much water you can fit inside a wellington boot! Ask for a suggested donation to enter and award a prize to whoever is closest. Donate a day s salary Would your manager or director be willing to donate a day s pay? This is a great way for them to get involved if they re too busy to come along to other activities. Quiz night Pick a venue and get working on those questions. You host the night and get your guests to donate to play. Movie night All you need is a great movie and some popcorn, then ask your friends and family to make a donation to come round to yours for the evening. Come dine with me Fancy yourself a great cook? Why not organise a month of dinner parties with your friends and family. Ask for a donation from each competitor and take it in turns to cook for each other. Offer the winner a prize and the rest of the proceeds go towards your fundraising target. Games night You don t have to be a Monopoly master to host a games night. You just need games, a place and people who will pay to play. It can be as simple as Charades or if you have a screen and console to hand, why not go down the gaming route? If you re tight on time, you could even put on a lunchtime session at work and get your colleagues involved. Remember If you organise a fundraising activity as a group, you can split the total between your CRUK Giving Pages. Raffle prize request letters A great way to raise money is by organising a raffle or an auction. When you approach companies for prizes, they ll often ask for a letter of authorisation from the charity to prove that the request is legitimate. We can happily provide this just let us know and we ll send it to you. Need materials? We have a great selection of materials that will help your fundraising activity look the part. If you need posters, balloons, banners, bunting, or collection goblets or buckets, please get in touch and we ll get these to you. Don t forget to share your progress on social media with our downloadable badges and show off your fundraising alongside your mileage with the totaliser poster we ve made you. Visit cruk.org/thegreatrow

Collecting money Online fundraising The first step is to register to take part in this year s The Great Row. If you haven t already, you can do this online at cruk.org/thegreatrow. You ll then automatically set up your CRUK Giving Page, which means 100% of the money you raise will go towards speeding up life-saving research. Gift Aid it Gift Aid increases the value of donations by 25% by allowing us to reclaim basic rate tax on a donation. For more information, visit cruk.org/get-involved/donate/gift-aid. You re helping to beat cancer Rhys s story Rhys was only four when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He had surgery to remove the tumour, but complications and infections meant he had to have five more surgical procedures. As part of his treatment, Rhys took part in a clinical trial funded by Cancer Research UK, which aims to increase survival for children and young people with low-grade glioma brain tumours that start in the glial cells, which support nerve cells in the brain. Rhys s mum Keely said: Lots of the children at school ask him about the scar running down the back of his head, but he takes it in his stride. He s a happy, affectionate, loveable boy and an inspiration to us all. And when his favourite toy monkey Geoff had a hole in his head, eight-year-old Rhys asked his granny to sew it up but wanted to make sure he had a scar, just like his. Good luck from of all of us at Cancer Research UK!
