Coach Development Seminar Valencia July 2015

Session Objective Measuring / Monitoring the young athlete Why do we use Postural analysis What is Coaching Essential Components of a Development Pathway

What do we mean by Age? 1. Chronological age (Date of Birth) 2. Developmental age (Physical, mental and emotional) 3. Skeletal age (Degree of ossification of the bone structure) 4. General training age 5. Sport-specific training age 6. Relative age (Biological differences)

Youth Development

Development must match the natural pattern of physical maturity

Olympic Weightlifting Postural Analysis and Functional Movement Sample Test

Why so we test Functional Weightlifting movement test/screen identifying priorities with how the athlete moves. 1. Identify movement patterns compensations 2. Structural balance/strength discrepancies 3. Joint mobility restrictions 4. Muscle activation 5. Stability issues

The Improvement Paradigm 1. Observe and analyse 2. Remove the Negative Do not build strength on dysfunction 3. Establish Functional Mobility - Patterning 4. Establish Functional Stability - Control 5. Establish Functional Performance Execution 6. Train the new motor action Progressive overload 7. Implement in competition

Center of gravity lifter Center of gravity barbel Qualitative biomechanical models of Olympic exercises The pre-motor or cognitive reaction time, the moment in which no muscular action takes place but the body prepares a response on a cognitive level; The reaction times, in other words the temporal space between the moment of certain identification of the stimulus and the start of the response; The motor reaction time, often measured by an EMG, indicates the start of neuromuscular activity even if not yet correlated to the movement; electromechanical delay; The movement time, intended as the temporal interval between the start and the end of a movement; The total time, which represents the sum of points 2, 3 and 4.

Squat Stance

Overhead Squat Objective To assess bilateral, symmetrical and functional mobility of the hips, knees and ankles The Bar overhead assesses the shoulders as well as the thoracic spine

Front Squat Objective Ankle Flexibility Wrist flexibility Shoulder Flexibility Lower Back Flexibility Pelvis Stabilisation Leg Stabilisation

Questions

What is Coaching? A Coaches point of view

Olympic Weightlifting A late specialization sport is classified as a sport in which emphasis should be placed on general and holistic development through developmental activities at a young age in order to enhance the potential genetic ability

Coaching Cycle Future Identify Reflect & Evaluate Plan & Design Deliver Interact

Coaching Art or Science? Science To support the coach there is a wealth of scientific information based on research conducted with athletes Information is available to support the coach and athlete in all areas of training and development including: Nutrition Physiology Medicine Biomechanics Psychology

Coaching Art or Science? Art The art of coaching comes when the coach has to: Analyse the scientific data Convert it into Coaching and training programs to help develop the athlete This analysis process relies heavily on the coach's experience and knowledge of the event/sport and the athlete concerned 28

The coach needs to be able to: Assist athletes to prepare training programs Communicate effectively with athletes Assist athletes to develop new skills Use evaluation tests to monitor training progress and predict performance. Therefore, you can see that it is a very difficult task and requires a very special person 29

What are the Characteristics of a good coach Patience Experienced Organised Knowledgeable Good Communicator Motivator Sense of Humour Innovative Good Social Skills Interesting Listener

Coaches & Athletes

Coach Development Coach development must have a clear documented pathway for coaches wishing to progress to the elite level Appoint appropriate coaches for rural, city and provincial areas and supply support and training if required There must be close working relationship between the Performance coach, key coaches and the service providers Targeted potential performance coaches are identified and receive mentoring and performance reviews Coaches in performance have regular performance reviews and have an individualised and structured development plan

Progressive Overload The single most important factor in getting positive results from any type of workout Have you planned Recovery Have you used unload weeks Is there regular monitoring Lifters recovery POMS, Weight Technique analysis Are you recording VOLUME and INTENSITY Are you applying TAPERING to programme Testing - S.P.V measurements

General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) (Selye 1974) Stimulus Train Fitness Fatigue Recovery Supercompensat Decrease

Principles of Training Overload: Add greater resistance, make it more difficult Adaptation: Body adapts to load, speed of movement, Recovery Progression: Must start with technique then gradual (no more than 1-2.5 kg loads), periodisation. Generality: A.A (Circuit)- Core lifts Olympic - Power Interference: Do not complete after intense session, Individualisation: Individual needs addressed

Principles of Training Sport Success Specificity Overload Adaptation Variation Relevant to goals Progressive Calculated Rest Recovery Training cycles FITT Frequency Intensity Time Type

Developing a System Structure LTAD S&C + Skill Approach KPIs Athletes + Coaches Coaching Pathway + CDP Pathway

Developing a Pathway Coaching Cues How WELL not How MUCH How WELL And How MUCH How WELL How MUCH How FAST Athlete Level Long-term Pathway

Program Design - Progressive Overload

Athlete Centred. Coach Driven. Performance Focused

Coaching Development The secret to success is defined by the vision, mission and strategy. Vision - Where you want to go. Mission - Statement that defines what you will do to try to reach their vision. Strategy - Sets out goals and activities to achieve the goals in relation to the mission and vision statements.
