Prepare Watch our video instructions: SmileDirectClub.com/videos BEFORE YOU BEGIN Read all instructions in this guide. You will need: Clock with minute & second timer Towel Brush and floss your teeth Clean hands Be sure to wear your included nitrile gloves. Do NOT wear latex gloves. Remove trays from bag Check tray size by inserting them in your mouth without putty. If the trays pinch at the sides of your mouth or don t extend to your rear molars, please call 800.848.7566 and we will send you a different size. STEP 1 Remove the putty from one BASE container and one CATALYST container. IMPORTANT! Make only one tray at a time. Be sure to wear the included nitrile gloves while handling the putty and making your impressions! WHY DO MY IMPRESSIONS MATTER? SmileDirectClub Invisible Aligners work by applying pressure and torque at the base of your teeth. In order for them to successfully move your teeth, the aligner has to fit snugly over your teeth and extend approximately 1.5 mm over your gum line, or about the thickness of a penny. Because we use your impressions to create a 3D model of your mouth to ensure aligner fit, your impressions must accurately capture both the teeth and the gum line.
Mix & Mold 25 SECONDS STEP 2 Quickly mix by mushing one container of BASE putty and one container of CATALYST putty together until they are thoroughly mixed without any color swirls and are a uniform color. IMPORTANT! Once you start mixing, you have 60 seconds to get the tray with putty into your mouth. 10 SECONDS Roll putty between your hands forming a thick, solid cylinder shape. 25 SECONDS STEP 3 Within 25 seconds, evenly place inside tray to form a U shape. Lay putty into the tray. Do not push into place. Allow putty to extend to back edge of tray to ensure good captures of rear molars.
Take One Upper Impression STEP 4 Open and relax your mouth, and place the loaded tray inside. Keep your lips relaxed and gently pull lip over the tray and putty. Push any excess material up onto your gums to help create impression of gum line area. Leave in your mouth for 2 1/2 minutes. IMPORTANT! Bite down ALL the way through the material until you feel your teeth make contact with the bottom of the tray. Putty should fully envelope all teeth to capture the gum line. Push the bottom of the tray into your molars with your thumbs to capture your rear gum lines. IMPORTANT! Once tray is fully seated, do not wiggle or move it. Do not hold by tray handle. The green dotted line area represents the optimal position for your teeth, including your molars. At least half of your rear-most molar (including wisdom teeth) must be captured in the impression for aligners to fit correctly. STEP 5 Gently remove and inspect your first impression for defects. Before taking more impressions, compare your first impression results using the Self-Inspection Checklist on the following pages. IMPORTANT! Do not remove your impression putty from the tray.
Self-Inspection Checklist BAD IMPRESSION: GUMLINE ABSENT Check the gumline of all teeth. There should be a clear line between your teeth and your gums all the way around your mouth. THIS IS THE NO. 1 REASON IMPRESSIONS HAVE TO BE RETAKEN! COMMON PROBLEMS Gumline absent tray was not seated enough (took an impression of only the tips of the teeth). Gumline not clearly defined, or looks distorted tray was removed too early (before the material was set), or movement occurred after the tray was seated. GOOD IMPRESSION: GUMLINE PRESENT Your Impression should have the gumline present around all of your teeth.
Self-Inspection Checklist BAD IMPRESSION: TRAY SHOW- THROUGH Inspect the impression thoroughly for places where you can see blue tray instead of putty. COMMON PROBLEMS Tray was pushed too far down. Tray was pushed too far to one side of mouth or was simply too small. Tray was placed too far back in your mouth and scraped the front of the teeth upon seating. GOOD IMPRESSION: NO TRAY SHOW- THROUGH No blue plastic should be visible through any area of your impression.
Self-Inspection Checklist BAD IMPRESSION: DOUBLE IMPRINT Inspect the deepest parts of the impression. You should see a single clear imprint of your teeth all the way around. COMMON PROBLEMS If there are two or more imprints, the tray was partially seated, then moved and fully seated. GOOD IMPRESSION: SINGLE IMPRINT Your impression should have one single imprint of your teeth.
Self-Inspection Checklist BAD IMPRESSION: BACK TEETH NOT CAPTURED Inspect your impression of the back teeth ( molars ). At least half of your most rear molar (including wisdom teeth) must be captured in the impression for aligners to fit correctly. COMMON PROBLEMS Tray long enough, but impression putty stops short of back teeth when mixing and rolling putty, roll must be longer to capture back teeth. Impression putty covers entire length of tray, but there is not a clear impression of your rear molar. If the tray does not allow for your rear molars to be captured in an impression, please call (800) 848-7566 for a larger tray size. GOOD IMPRESSION: BACK TEETH CAPTURED Back teeth are captured. At least half of your most rear molar (including wisdom teeth) must be captured in the impression for aligners to fit correctly.
