American Cancer Society Relay For Life Medford NJ 2011 Sponsorship Opportunities South Jersey Region 1.800.227.2345 www.relayforlife.org
Dear Corporate Sponsor To most people, birthdays are just a reminder that they re getting older. But at the American Cancer Society, Happy Birthday is a victory song, because a world with less cancer is a world with more birthdays. And that is definitely something to celebrate. More than 11 million Americans who have survived cancer - and countless others who have avoided it - will celebrate a birthdays this year, thanks to the progress we re making together to help people stay well, get well, to find cures and fight back. Relay For Life, the signature activity of the American Cancer Society and the largest fund-raiser ever known to mankind, will be held in over 5,200 communities in the United States and in 19 foreign countries in 2011. We offer companies the opportunity to partner with their community in the fight against cancer. As a Corporate Sponsor of Relay For Life, you will partner with the American Cancer Society, the premier community-based health organization, dedicated to eliminating cancer and supporting those touched by cancer in the same communities where you live and work. In 2010, communities throughout South Jersey saw the corporate sponsorship commitment first-hand through corporate teams, logo-printed materials, tents, banners, speaking opportunities and much more. Our 10,000 participants wore the corporate logos proudly on each and every Relay For Life participant t-shirt at one of fifteen Relay For Life events in South Jersey. In 2011, we will host 20 events and hope to impact the lives of 12,500 South Jersey residents. Please consider our Corporate Sponsorship packet as your commitment to fight cancer in South Jersey. Your decision to become a Corporate Sponsor boldly states your call to action by your company. Our Sponsorship Opportunities follow. Please let us know if your commitment and desire to win this battle fits your Community Leadership intentions as a partner with the American Cancer Society. Together, through Relay For Life, we will create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Thank you.
Relay For Life Facts History Relay For Life began in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life was born. It s Extraordinary Anyone who has stepped foot onto a track at Relay For Life has felt the impact that a single event can have on a community. Imagine, the power of over 5,200 communities across the nation united in a single cause. It s more than a fundraiser Relay is the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life allows us to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, Remember those who have lost the battle and Fight Back against cancer. Why 24 hours? We are asking you to give a day out of your life for those who may not have another. There are similarities between the Relay For Life and a cancer patient s experience: It may get really hot during the day, and you may feel like quitting, but you keep on walking. It may get windy and cold at night, it might event rain, but, you press on through the darkest hours knowing that the sun will come up and it will be a new day. Cancer never sleeps, so for one day, neither do we. It s Nationwide and It s Growing! You are part of something BIG. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the largest annual not-for-profit fundraising event in the world. In 2010, more than 3.5 million Relay participants heard the messages of the American Cancer Society in the United States, and the 600,000 survivors in attendance inspired us. Over 5,200 communities held Relay For Life events here in the United States and 19 foreign countries came aboard the Relay train as well. The Time is Now! The fight against cancer can t wait or slow down even for one moment. We are making tremendous progress in our fight against cancer, but we will have a long way to go. Your involvement with the American Cancer Society is helping to save lives, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.
The Facts About Funds Raised Together we re saving lives and creating more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. We are helping people stay well: Since 2000, we have helped 400,000 tobacco users by offering one-on-one support and customized quit tools through the American Cancer Society s telephone counseling service, Quitline. We develop guidelines for nutrition, physical activity, and cancer screenings so you know what steps to take to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest, most treatable stage. We are helping people get well: Our phone lines are open every minute of every day and every night for people needing answers. Every year, we provide information, help and support to nearly one million people who call us at 1.800.227.2345. We are a trusted resource for more than 23 million visitors to cancer.org each year who access the latest updates and news on cancer and listings of local programs and services This year, we served nearly 52,000 patients in NY and NJ more than ever before. We are finding cures: We have contributed to a 14 percent decrease in the cancer death rate since the early 1990s. That means about 650,000 deaths were avoided and more birthdays were celebrated. We ve had a hand in nearly every major cancer breakthrough of the past century, such as confirming the link between cigarette smoking and cancer, establishing the link between obesity and multiple cancers, developing drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer, and showing that mammography is the most effective way to detect breast cancer. Last year, American Cancer Society-funded researcher Dr. Yibin Kang at Princeton University discovered a gene responsible for breast cancer metastasis in up to 40 percent of cases. A treatment can now be developed to block this gene s activity. We are fighting back: People who live in NY and NJ are protected by smoked free laws, thanks in part to the efforts of the Society and our nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). We are advocating for health care that is accessible, affordable, available and administratively simple so people are able to get the treatment they need, at a cost they can afford, through continuous coverage that they can easily understand.
