American Cancer Society Relay For Life Ocean City 2012 Sponsorship Opportunities South Jersey Region 1.800.227.2345 www.relayforlife.org
Relay For Life Facts History Relay For Life began in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life was born. It s Extraordinary Anyone who has stepped foot onto a track at Relay For Life has felt the impact that a single event can have on a community. Imagine, the power of nearly 5,000 communities across the nation united in a single cause. It s more than a fundraiser Relay is the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life allows us to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, Remember those who have lost the battle and Fight Back against cancer. Why 24 hours? We are asking you to give a day out of your life for those who may not have another. There are similarities between the Relay For Life and a cancer patient s experience: It may get really hot during the day, and you may feel like quitting, but you keep on walking. It may get windy and cold at night, it might event rain, but, you press on through the darkest hours knowing that the sun will come up and it will be a new day. Cancer never sleeps, so for one day, neither do we. It s Nationwide and It s Growing! You are part of something BIG. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the largest annual not-for-profit fundraising event in the world. In 2011, more than 3 million Relay participants heard the messages of the American Cancer Society in the United States, and the 500,000 survivors in attendance inspired us. Nearly 5,000 communities held Relay For Life events here in the United States and over 20 foreign countries came aboard the Relay train as well. The Time is Now! The fight against cancer can t wait or slow down even for one moment. We are making tremendous progress in our fight against cancer, but we will have a long way to go. Your involvement with the American Cancer Society is helping to save lives, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.
The Facts About Funds Raised Together we re saving lives and creating more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures and by fight back. We are helping people stay well: The American Cancer Society partners with Free and Clear to operate its Quit For Life tobacco cessation telephone counseling program, which enrolled 305,000 tobacco users in 2010.. We develop guidelines for nutrition, physical activity, and cancer screenings so you know what steps to take to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest, most treatable stage. We provide practical tips, tools and online resources to help you stay healthy at cancer.org We are helping people get well: Our phone lines at 800.227.2345 are open every minute of every day for people needing answers. Every year, we provide information, help and support to nearly one million callers. We are a trusted resource for more than 25 million visitors to cancer.org each year who access the latest updates and news on cancer and listings of local programs and services Our nationwide network of 31 Hope Lodges provide lodging and extensive support services to those who must travel far from home to access their best hope for a cure. Our three Hope Lodges in Manhattan, Buffalo and Rochester served more than 3,500 guests this year. We are finding cures: The American Cancer Society s latest Cancer Statistics report found that death rates from cancer in the United States have decreased by 21 percent among men and 12 percent among women since the early 1990s. That s more than 767,000 deaths averted, or more than 350 more birthdays a day. We ve had a hand in nearly every major cancer researched breakthrough of the last century, including the discovery of breast cancer genes, and effective treatments such as Tamoxifen, Herceptin (for breast cancer), Gleevec (for leukemia), Velcade (for multiple myeloma) and Provenge (for advanced prostate cancer). In 2010, the Society funded more than $107 million for 222 research grants and 54 training grants focused on discovering causes and cures for cancer. Nationwide, we have funded nearly $3.5 billion in research and are funding more than $473 million in multi-year projects. We are fighting back: We celebrated a major victory in 2010 with the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act. Though not perfect, the law dramatically improves access to health care and protects patients from being denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions, being charged more for their coverage because of their health status, being faced with annual or lifetime limits that result in sudden termination of care. Thanks in part to the American Cancer Society s Cancer Action Network, people in New York and New Jersey are protected from tobacco smoke in workplaces, restaurants, and bars. New York City residents now enjoy smokefree parks and beaches as well.
