WHO WE ARE
DADTCO Philafrica is a manufacturer of cassava-based products. Our innovative mobile processing plants are adapted to the African rural circumstances. Cassava is the major starchy food crop in Sub Saharan Africa and can only be grown efficiently by smallholder farmers. We bridge the gap between small-holder farmers and food companies by providing breakthrough cassava processing technologies thereby creating a market that small-holder farmers can sell to. OUR VISION To be a leader in cassava processing in Africa, working together with small-holder farmers. OUR MISSION To initiate a cassava revolution across Africa, alleviating subsistence farmers from poverty and turning them into commercial farmers. 3
CASSAVA IS A root crop similar to other starch crops such as potatoes. Officially called manihot esculenta, but has many names: tapioca, manioc, yuca and mandioca. The most important starch staple crop in sub-saharan Africa. Easily grown, drought resistant, high yielding and well adapted to climate change. A crop yielding the highest revenue earned per hectare in Africa. NATURALLY GLUTEN FREE The flour is extremely well suited for baking. Compared to other gluten free flours, the characteristics of cassava flour come closest to those of wheat flour. Our flour is an innovative substitute for wheat flour and enables the production of a number of gluten free baked goods with virtually the same taste, texture, crumb and baking characteristics as those made with wheat flour. 4
DADTCO is a leader in cassava processing throughout Africa. Our patented mobile processing technology allows same day (after harvest) processing leading to a consistent topquality starch. Our mobile technology also results in zero waste. 100% of the cassava root is utilised. 5
PRODUCTS At DADTCO Philafrica, cassava is processed into one intermediate product and into two end products. The intermediate product is Cassava Starch Paste (CSP). The end products are Cassava Starch Flour (CSF) and Natural Cassava Fibres (NCF). We guarantee consistent top-quality starch-products, due to our unique and breakthrough mobile cassava processing technology. OUR PRODUCTS 6
CASSAVA STARCH FLOUR ALSO KNOWN AS TAPIOCA FLOUR CSF is a white flour that is odourless and neutral in taste. CSF has many different applications: in baking it can act in composite flours for bread, biscuits, snacks and pasta. It is a great gluten free substitute for wheat flour when compared to other gluten free flours, as its characteristics come closest to that of wheat flour. It can also be used extensively in the food and beverage industry, in the manufacture of culinary cubes, powdered drink products, snacks and soups, beer brewing and in the meat industry. CASSAVA STARCH PASTE Cassava Starch Paste is a semi wet cassava paste that contains max 50% water, 49% released starch as is and less than 1% fibres. Cassava Starch Paste is packed in 20 kg plastic bags and has a shelf life of one year. The paste can be further processed into a number of downstream related products including, amongst others, cassava starch flour, cassava starch or native cassava starch, cassavabased syrups, modified starches (used in food preparation), sorbitol, bioethanol and beer. Since 2011 Impala beer, processed in Mozambique, is constituted with 70% Cassava Starch Paste. NATURAL CASSAVA FIBRES Natural Cassava Fibres are made up of mostly cellulose and hemicellulose. The fibres retain 8 to 9 times their weight in water, which increases volume and helps address moisture migration issues. In addition, the fibres alter the structure of baked products, making them resistant to staling, tearing and penetration and thus more pliable. There are many different applications for Natural Cassava Fibres. These include bakery products, meat, dairy, creamy formulations, beverages, ice cream, soup, baby-food, premixes and powdered drinks. 7
PRODUCTION PROCESS 1 CASSAVA FARMERS Farmers produce the cassava root. We provide them with better agricultural practices and new varieties. DAILY COLLECTIONS Every day our trucks pick up the cassava roots from the small-holder farmers fields and bring them back to the mobile processing site. 2 8
NATURAL CASSAVA FIBRES In the Autonomous Mobile Processing Unit (AMPU), to release all the starch the cassava roots are grated in a high-speed rasper. Then the fibres are removed in the Mobile Refinery Unit (MRU). The fibres are one of our end products known as Natural Cassava Fibres. CASSAVA STARCH PASTE After the fibres are removed a slurry is left over. This slurry is dewatered into Cassava Starch Paste, with a moisture content of max 50%. CASSAVA STARCH FLOUR To make Cassava Starch Flour we dry the paste in a Mobile Drying Unit. The end product is a top-quality Cassava Starch Flour. MOBILE PROCESSING ANNUAL 3 MONTH ROTATION 3 In the Mobile Starch Plant, the roots are processed into Cassava Starch Paste, Cassava Starch Flour and Natural Cassava Fibres. Our production process utilizes 100% of the cassava roots resulting in zero waste. 4 Our mobile factory moves to a different processing location every three months to ensure we reach as many smallholder-farmers as possible. Once a year we return to our previous sites, as cassava has a growing cycle of 10-12 months and a harvesting window of 12-24 months. 9

The importance of Cassava to many Africans is epitomised in the name given to it in the Ewe (a language spoken in Ghana, Togo and Benin). They call it Agbeli which literally means THERE IS LIFE.
