About the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy The Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is a non-partisan, non-profit education and advocacy organization committed to reducing the rate of teen pregnancy across Texas. We provide statewide leadership around this issue. We focus on what works and connect Texas communities to the tools and research they need to make an impact. Teen pregnancy is a very complex issue, but simply put, we envision a Texas where all children are wanted and all families are prepared. The Texas Campaign is creating a Texas Roadmap that focuses on four key areas: v Provide: We provide research and best practices to organizations across Texas. v Connect: We connect local communities to customized approaches. v Strengthen: We coordinate statewide activities to improve impact. v Engage: We raise awareness and advocate for effective prevention programs and policies. Why it matters v Texas consistently has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. v Texas has the highest rate of repeat teen birth in the nation. v Texas spends more state dollars than any other state as a result. Teenage births cost Texas taxpayers $1.1 billion in health care, foster care and lost tax revenue in 2010. v Teen pregnancy is connected to lower educational attainment, an unprepared workforce, higher incarceration rates, more kids in foster care, higher demands on Medicaid and the public health system and the repetition of this cycle generation after generation. v When children are born to parents just a few years older, not only do they have better outcomes overall, but they are more likely to be born to those ready for the lifelong responsibility of being a parent.
