About the Symposium The Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy s 5 th annual symposium is a three-day program, scheduled for April 11-13, 2016, in Austin, Texas, that will bring together more than 400 professionals from across the state to participate in panel discussions, presentations and professional development workshops focused on providing the information, resources and tools necessary to create change and improve teen pregnancy rates in Texas. The theme The Texas Roadmap: Building Champions for Change will focus on the importance of finding new advocates, while also providing resources to those already giving a voice to this issue. Emphasis will be placed on creating partnerships and building coalitions to support local community efforts in teen pregnancy prevention, sexuality education, youth development, and adolescent health. Audience The Texas Campaign Symposium targets professionals from across Texas and throughout the United States including social workers, clinicians, researchers, educators, youth service professionals, graduate students and other key staff representing both large and small organizations such as universities/colleges, member organizations, non-profit organizations, government entities, school districts and the healthcare industry. Over the past four years, this event has played host to more than 1,000 participants. 87% Women 57% from Austin/San Antonio and surrounding Areas 28% Organizational Decision Makers CEO/Directors Majority Between Ages of 26 and 55 Highly Educated, Advanced Degree Holders Key 2015 Sponsors and Representative Organizations Austin, Dallas, Edgewood, Forth Worth, Northeast and San Antonio ISDs Baylor College of Medicine City of Austin and City of San Antonio CommuniCare Health Centers Healthy Futures of Texas Healthy Teen Network People s Community Clinic St. David s Foundation St. Suzie s Foundation Scott and White Texas Energy Lobby Texas Tech University Health Science Center Texas State University Texas Department of State Health Services Texas Medical Association University Health System University of Texas School of Public Health University of Texas School of Social Work

About the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy The Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is a non-partisan, non-profit education and advocacy organization committed to reducing the rate of teen pregnancy across Texas. We provide statewide leadership around this issue. We focus on what works and connect Texas communities to the tools and research they need to make an impact. Teen pregnancy is a very complex issue, but simply put, we envision a Texas where all children are wanted and all families are prepared. The Texas Campaign is creating a Texas Roadmap that focuses on four key areas: v Provide: We provide research and best practices to organizations across Texas. v Connect: We connect local communities to customized approaches. v Strengthen: We coordinate statewide activities to improve impact. v Engage: We raise awareness and advocate for effective prevention programs and policies. Why it matters v Texas consistently has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. v Texas has the highest rate of repeat teen birth in the nation. v Texas spends more state dollars than any other state as a result. Teenage births cost Texas taxpayers $1.1 billion in health care, foster care and lost tax revenue in 2010. v Teen pregnancy is connected to lower educational attainment, an unprepared workforce, higher incarceration rates, more kids in foster care, higher demands on Medicaid and the public health system and the repetition of this cycle generation after generation. v When children are born to parents just a few years older, not only do they have better outcomes overall, but they are more likely to be born to those ready for the lifelong responsibility of being a parent.
