Relay For Life began in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington when Dr. Gordon Klatt ran and walked for 24 hours on the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound. He covered 81 miles and raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. As he circled the track, friends paid $25 to run or walk with him for 30 minutes. In 1986, Dr. Klatt s dream of teams participating in a 24-hour relay event evolved. Nineteen teams took part in this event and raised $33,000. The spirit of Relay was captured as the infield of Stadium Bowl was decorated with the campsites of 220 participants. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society s National Signature Event. Relay is the largest non-profit fundraising event in the world. In 2009, 5146 Relays were held throughout the United States and in nineteen other countries. Over 3.5 million participants and over 500,000 cancer survivors participate in the opening laps. The volunteers and participants of these events raised over $388 million. Over $3.86 billion dollars has been raised since 1985. Eastern Shore Relay For Life began in 1995 when the founders sold luminaria bags and held a service in memory of those who had lost the fight against cancer. In what was described as a quite inspiring display, 270 luminaria bags were placed around the George McMath building. In 1996, the first Relay For Life was organized under the leadership of Margaret Ann Miles. The event was cancelled because of a hurricane, but 22 teams planned their campsites and worked hard to raise $43,460 over the Relay season. Since 1996, the Eastern Shore Relay For Life has raised over $1 million dollars and has been recognized as one of the top fundraising Relays in the South Atlantic Division. At Relay For Life, teams of walkers from businesses, schools, civic groups, churches, neighborhoods, and families come together to celebrate the culmination of their fundraising efforts. Each team creates a theme related campsite. The members enjoy music, food, contests, and a variety of activities as they embark upon a 24 hour relay in which one team member is always circling the track. Relay For Life is a fundraising event that benefits the many individuals in our community affected by cancer. At Relay, there is a strong emphasis on education and prevention, as well as treatment. The focal points of the two day event revolve around the celebration of cancer survivors in the Opening, Closing, and Luminaria Ceremonies.
