Needs Statement Metastatic, Stage IV, or advanced breast cancer is the spread of cancer cells beyond the breast to new areas of the body, often by way of the lymph system or bloodstream. Metastases account for more than 90% of cancer morbidity and mortality. In metastatic breast cancer, this translates to nearly 40,000 deaths annually in the United States and more than 500,000 deaths worldwide. Metastatic breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women under 50 years of age. The goal of this activity is to educate clinicians on ways to improve survival rates and quality-of-life in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Target Audience Clinicians who treat patients with metastatic breast cancer. Objectives At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to: Implement evidence-based recommendations for treatment of metastatic breast cancer and its subtypes. Identify evidence-based recommendations to improve palliative care and end-of-life counseling for patients with metastatic breast cancer. Describe how precision medicine can help improve treatment of metastatic breast cancer.
