Chapter 6 Study Guide STUDY TIPS Read the chapter objectives. Look up any unfamiliar words. Read the questions below before you read the chapter. As you read the chapter, answer the following questions. Later you can use this guide to review the information in the chapter. Lesson 1 1. What are hormones? Hormones are chemical substances produced in certain glands that help to regulate the way your body functions. 2. What is the function of the endocrine system? What glands form the system? The endocrine system regulates body functions. The glands are the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries in females, and testes in males. 3. What is metabolism? What gland produces the hormone that regulates it? Metabolism is the process by which the body gets energy from food. The rate of metabolism is regulated by the hormone produced by the thyroid gland. 4. Define puberty. Puberty is the time when you develop certain physical characteristics of adults of your own gender. Lesson 2 5. What is the reproductive system? 6. List the parts of the male reproductive system. The prostate gland, the urethra, the scrotum, the testes, the penis, and the epididymis. Lesson 3 7. What is fertilization? Fertilization is the joining of a male sperm cell and a female egg cell to form a new human life. 8. Define menstruation. Menstruation is the flow of the uterine lining material from the body. 9. List the parts of the female reproductive system. The ovaries; the fallopian tubes; the uterus, or womb; the cervix; the labia; and the vagina. Lesson 4 10. Describe how the body is organized, from cells to body systems. Cells are the basic building blocks of life. Each type has a particular function. Tissues are groups of similar cells that do a particular job. Organs are made up of tissues that are joined together to perform a function. Body systems are groups of organs that work together to carry out related tasks. 11. What structures within cells influence heredity? Define the structures. Chromosomes. Chromosomes are threadlike structures that carry the codes for inherited traits. Each chromosome is divided into many thousands of small parts called genes. Genes are the basic units of heredity. Lesson 5 12. List the stages of life. Infancy (to age 1); toddler, early childhood (ages 1 3); preschooler, middle childhood (ages 3 5); late childhood (ages 6 11); adolescence (ages 12 18); adulthood (age 19 and onward). 13.
