Texas North Star Sams Area 17 2006 November Newsletter ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The President s Corner We all have a lot to be thankful for, but November is the time we pause in our busy lives to think about our many blessings. One blessing is having the time, health, and financial means to enjoy camping, but family and friends head my list of blessings. And I count you guys as both. Our group has become like a second family to me. I hope that the new folks will soon feel the bond that we share. Kathy Helwick As always, feel free to contact me with questions and/or comments. Khelwick@msn.com Cell: 972-849-6727 Home: 972-416-6727 Officers: President: Kathy Helwick Newsletter Editor: Sherry Moran Vice-President: Steve Young Special Projects: Pat Foitek Treasurer: Jim Bailey Sunshine/Chaplain: Sherry Young Secretary: Del Duerr Web Master: Tim Moran Wagon Master: Lew Foitek October Meeting: These minutes have been edited/shortened by Sherry Moran, Newsletter Editor We met in Corsicana, Texas, at the American RV Park, under sunny skies and with a temperature in the 70 s. After the invocation, we were called to order and attendance was taken. Visitors were Darrell & Tami Pattersons, sponsored by the Duerrs. The minutes for June were reviewed and approved. Secretary Del Duerr reported the McPhersons want to keep their membership with us. The roster has been updated and sent out. It includes new officers for 2007 and has been sent to AD, Barbara Delgado. The Treasurer s report was distributed. Jim Bailey notified us that he is giving up his position as Treasurer. Laura LaTurner was appointed Interim Treasurer by President Kathy Helwick. Chapter dues for 2007 are now due. Chapter patches are available also.

Lew Foitek, Wagonmaster, reported on campouts for 2006 and 2007. Our November campout is at Whispering Pines, Tyler, Texas. The Christmas Party will be held Dec. 10, 2006, at the Duerrs home. The January breakfast will be held at the IHOP at 2345 S. Stemmons, Lewisville. We are still scheduled for Dellanera RV Park, Galveston in February. In March, we are scheduled for Destiny RV park, and in April, will be at Pilot Knoll. Others are still to be planned. Each rig is responsible for contacting Lew the weekend prior to the campout to confirm whether they will be attending or not. Pat Foitek reported on Special Projects. Making fleece blankets for the Patients Comprehensive Cancer Center in Carrollton will be worked on and finished at the November campout. Stuffed animals will again be donated to the Denton Co. Children s Advocacy Center. Donations are to be brought to the Nov. campout. Pat will make arrangements with the contact person on when it will be best to deliver them. Sherry Young, Sunshine Chairman, reported on several things. There was a birthday party for Del Duerr and Jackie Reid. Birthday cards were to the Foiteks and Jim Bailey. An anniversary card was also sent to the Foiteks. A birthday card for prospective member, Marlene Runte, was available to be signed. Sherry will turn in receipts for reimbursement of Sunshine expenses. Tim Moran, Webmaster and Historian, reported he would like anyone wanting to share trip pictures should forward them to Tim to post on the website. Tim is working on updating pictures of each couple with their rigs. Tim will also be taking pictures of each member. Sherry Moran, Newsletter Editor, reported that the October newsletter has been sent out and she would like more pictures and stories. Under Old Business; The 50/50 was cancelled. Prospective members are Larry & Marlene Runte, Darrell & Tami Patterson, Pete & Barb Evans. The next Meet, Greet & Eat dinner is scheduled for Abuelos at 6:30 pm, 2520 Stemmons, Lewisville. The Chapter Christmas Party will be held on Dec. 10, at the home of the Duerrs, starting at 1:00 pm. Directions will be handed out November campout. All members were reminded to continue working on their list contacting area Good Sam members without a chapter and invite them to the next MG&E outing. New Business: Discussion on creating a position of Asst. Wagonmaster to assist Lew Foitek while he is out of the area. Alan Laturner has expressed interest and will be asked to take this position. Kathy appointed a committee to review/revise chapter Constitution and SOPs. The committee will be headed by Tim Moran and will include Kathy Helwick and Del Duerr. Steve Young made a motion that our donations this year go to 4 area charities. It was seconded and passed and the charities are Denton Co. Children s Advocacy Center, Dogs For the Deaf, the American Diabetes Assoc. and the American Cancer Society. Dave Helwick and Sherry Young will research for local affiliates. It was moved and seconded that each rig will pay $5 monthly to the host couple to cover the cost of the entrée. Additional reservations will be made at Dellanera RV Park in Galveston for February. Lew Foitek will find out to whom the Good Sam yearbook information is made available. There was a question on how to adopt a highway or park. It will be researched. It was voted not to return to Corsicana in 2007 for a campout. Mini-rally in Waco Oct. 26 & 27. (editorial note: This is the State Samboree and lasts 4 days). Lew & Pat Foitek will attend. Discussion of future campout destinations will be held in Nov. Also there was discussion on future limiting of chapter membership. 20 rigs was suggested, and visitors will always be welcome. Dave & Kathy Helwick will celebrate their 16 year anniversary on Nov. 3, 2006.

The election was held and incoming officers for 2007 are Del Duerr, President; Steve Young, Vice- President; Jackie Reid, Secretary; Laura LaTurner, Treasurer; Lew Foitek, Wagonmaster. Special thanks were made to weekend hosts, Tim & Sherry Moran. The meeting was adjourned. Wagonmaster Lew Foitek Future Campouts: November Campout: November 17-19 (Whispering Pines/Tyler) Please bring scissors for working on the fleece blankets and stuffed animals for donations to the CAC. December Christmas Party December 10 January Business Meeting: Past Events While in Corsicana, we ate dinner on Friday night at Napoli, an Italian restaurant owned by a friend of Greg s. Really great service and food! It s in a historical building just off Main Street. Downtown has cobbled streets still!

We also discovered that the Cotton Patch Restaurant there has the best food of any CP we ve (Tim and Sherry) visited. Of course, there were several visits to the Collin Street Bakery! On Saturday, several couples went to nearby Kerens to the Cotton Festival. A small festival, but had lots to see and do including a Chili-Cookoff, other food booths, craft booths, cobbled streets and rides on a fire engine. The Meet, Eat and Greet was held at Abuelos and in attendance were the Helwicks, the Youngs, the Mollars, the Reids, the Duerrs, the Foiteks, the Morans, the LaTurners, and prospective members, the Pattersons. Good food, good friends, good time!! At the Samboree in Waco, Pat & Lew Foitek received patches for attending 10 Samborees! One was in Oklahoma and the other nine have been in Texas. Way to go! They hope to attend other out-of-state Samborees in the future. Happenings: NEXT CAMPOUT is November 17-19 at Whispering Pines near Tyler with the Helwicks hosting. Whispering Pines is a great location to appreciate/enjoy crisp air, falling leaves, and bonfires. Be sure to call Wagonmaster Lew at 972-492-1983 by the preceding Sunday (Nov 12) to let him know that you are coming. For Friday night dinner, each rig will provide their own dinner and we will all gather at the campground to eat together. Saturday night dinner will be a Thanksgiving feast with the Helwicks providing turkey and everyone bringing a dish to share. Here is a summary of the things you need to bring to this campout: 1. Your dinner for Friday night 2. A dish to share for Saturday night. Please send Kathy an email letting her know what you re bringing. khelwick@msn.com 3. At least one new stuffed animal that will be donated to Denton Children s Advocacy Center. 4. Your 2007 dues of $25 if you have not already paid them. 5. Scissors for working on the fleece blankets for the Cancer Center.
