S U P P O R T S T A F F T R A I N I N G T O O L S The Healthy Menu TRAINER QUALIFICATIONS The trainer must be very familiar with the home and the people who live there. The trainer must have done shopping for the home, and menu planning (if allowed). The trainer must be very familiar with the food suggestions from the USDA as it applies to menu planning in the home. The trainer must identify any individuals with special dietary requirements and be able to explain how those needs are met. MATERIALS NEEDED Food MyPlate diagram and information as shown in the Training Guide. Weekly menu for the home. TRAINING LOCATION Training can be conducted at any convenient location. ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE Approximately 15-30 minutes. TRAINING OUTLINE Trainer explains the MyPlate diagram and information. Trainer reviews weekly menu and describes how the diagram is applied in preparing menus. Trainer describes how the recommended food groups are used when it is necessary to make substitutions in the weekly menu. PROCEDURE TO TEST FOR RETENTION Trainee correctly completes the Healthy Menu Test.

THE HEALTHY MENU WHY THE HEALTHY MENU (INCLUDING THE MYPLATE PLAN) IS IMPORTANT AND HOW WE USE IT Everyone has heard about the benefits of eating right for good health and to prevent some medical problems. What can be difficult, however, is to figure out what that means on a day-to-day basis. Especially with our busy lifestyles, this can seem so challenging that it seems easier to fall back on what we have eaten all our lives, even if we know it might not be the healthiest way to eat. The Unites States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service has made those concerns easy to address in planning what to eat, or to know how to substitute one food for another if necessary. The diagram and information on the following pages give a guide to daily food choices. In planning what to eat each day, the overall balance of items should meet the recommendations described in the diagram. Make fruits and vegetables half the plate. Emphasize whole fruits when possible, and vary the vegetable. Make half the grains whole grains (read the labels). Use low-fat or fat-free milk or yogurt when possible. Vary the protein to use meats, fish, beans, or other sources. Make small changes to get started, as for some people this will be a big change in what they are used to eating. Use spices without salt. Choose foods and beverages from each MyPlate food group. Make sure your choices are limited in sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars. Start with small changes to make healthier choices you can enjoy. 1Find your healthy eating style Creating a healthy style means regularly eating a variety of foods to get the nutrients and calories you need. MyPlate s tips help you create your own healthy eating solutions MyWins. 2 Make half your plate fruits and vegetables Eating colorful fruits and vegetables is important because they provide vitamins and minerals and most are low in calories. 3 Focus on whole fruits Choose whole fruits fresh, frozen, dried, or canned in 100% juice. Enjoy fruit with meals, as snacks, or as a dessert. 4 Vary your veggies Try adding fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables to salads, sides, and main dishes. Choose a variety of colorful vegetables prepared in healthful ways: steamed, sauteed, roasted, or raw. 5 Make half your grains whole grains Look for whole grains listed first or second on the ingredients list try oatmeal, popcorn, whole-grain bread, and brown rice. Limit grain-based desserts and snacks, such as cakes, cookies, and pastries. Fruits Vegetables Grains 6Move to low-fat or fat-free milk or yogurt Choose low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt, and soy beverages (soymilk) to cut back on saturated fat. Replace sour cream, cream, and regular cheese with low-fat yogurt, milk, and cheese. 7 Vary your protein routine Mix up your protein foods to include seafood, beans and peas, unsalted nuts and seeds, soy products, eggs, and lean meats and poultry. Try main dishes made with beans or seafood like tuna salad or bean chili. 8Drink and eat beverages and food with less sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars Use the Nutrition Facts label and ingredients list to limit items high in sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars. Choose vegetable oils instead of butter, and oil-based sauces and dips instead of ones with butter, cream, or cheese. 9Drink water instead of sugary drinks Water is calorie-free. Non-diet soda, energy or sports drinks, and other sugar-sweetened drinks contain a lot of calories from added sugars and have few nutrients. 10 your MyPlate, MyWins.
