2 INTRODUCTION The residency programme in Prosthodontics is a three-year course covering all aspects of Prosthodontics and leading to the degree of Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics. Residents enrolled in this programme will be trained at the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore and the National Dental Centre. OBJECTIVES At the end of the residency training, a resident will - 1 have had integrated basic sciences education as a foundation for clinical and technical skill; 2 be proficient in diagnosis, planning and treatment of patients with exceptional prosthodontic problems; 3 be proficient in laboratory technical skills sufficient to evaluate technical work, communicate effectively with technicians and be able to train others in these skill; 4 be effectively interfaced with other specialties and disciplines in the care of patients requiring interdisciplinary therapy; and 5 be able to conduct independent research. 3 COURSE CONTENTS The resident will attend courses in advanced fixed partial denture prosthodontics, removable partial and complete denture prosthodontics, maxillo-facial prosthodontics and implant prosthodontics. The course will include clinical and laboratory training and research. There are also core modules taken with other programmes. 1 Core Modules Requirements The resident will be required to attend core modules that include Clinical Dental Photography, Basic Course in Implantology as well as Biostatistics and Research Methodology. For foreign students, the e-module SSM1205 The Nation s Health: Lesson from SARS is a requirement. 2 Didactic Course in Prosthodontics This will cover the areas of applied basic sciences relevant to prosthodontics, advanced fixed and removable partial and complete denture prosthodontics, occlusion and cranio mandibular disorders, dental materials science, maxillo-facial prosthodontics and dental implants. Lectures on other disciplines, which are related to prosthodontics such as dental radiology, endodontics, oral & maxillo-facial surgery, orthodontics and periodontics, will also be given. There will be also be literature review sessions on various aspects of Prosthodontics and related subjects. 3 Laboratory Training The resident will be taught advanced fixed and removable prosthodontic technique. This course is conducted to complement the clinical training. 4 Clinical Training The resident will be trained to diagnose and treat patients with difficult prosthodontic problems and learn to manage patients who require full mouth rehabilitation using fixed and removable prostheses and implant supported prostheses. He will also be exposed to the management of patients needing maxillo-facial prosthesis. The number and type of cases treated will be recorded. 5 Research The resident is required to complete a research project and defend this thesis as partial fulfilment of the MDS degree in Prosthodontics. Research protocols are to be submitted by the end of year one. Candidates are encouraged to write up projects for publication in refereed journals. 6 Teaching Updated 30-Jan-18 Page 5

4 EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS Every candidate is required to own a camera set-up with associated accessories for extraand intra-oral photography. In addition, it is a requirement for all residents to possess a notebook for access to the digital Electronic Patient Record charting system at NUHS as well as the digital learning resources of the university. 5 EXAMINATIONS ASSESSMENT Residents will be assessed annually through: 1 written tests 2 progress in their clinical performance by their supervisors A candidate will only be allowed to progress to the next academic year subject to favourable performances as assessed by the Committee. FINAL MDS EXAMINATION The Final MDS examination will be conducted in May/June at the end of the three-year programme. Residents will only be permitted to sit for the examination after having met the requirements set by the Committee. The examination will comprise:- 1 2 written papers; 2 a clinical examination; 3 presentation of a completed case; 4 oral examination; and 5 defence of thesis AWARD OF MDS (PROSTHODONTICS) The degree of Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics* will be awarded to the candidate on - 1 passing Final MDS examination; and 2 successful defence of thesis.
