FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT. Presidents Letter, March 2009 The test we must set for ourselves is not to march alone but to march in such a way that others will wish to join us. Hubert Humphrey, U.S. Vice President, Senator I want to extend a sincere welcome to all Tampa Bay NIGP chapter members as we march forward into another exciting year. This year promises an abundance of rewarding and challenging opportunities for all. In this time of economic distress, most if not all agencies have had their training budgets eliminated or reduced. How will you be able to continue with training and other educational opportunities? How can you acquire the knowledge for CPPO or CPPB certification? Your Tampa Bay Chapter answers these questions by offering a unique Stimulus Package. The Chapter offers Scholarship Points for your participation as committee chair, co-chair, and in the areas of vendor/ booth sales, sponsorships and volunteering at any of the fundraising events. Scholarship points may also be achieved by submitting procurement articles for publication, assisting with seminars or CPPO/CPPB reviews and attending the Chapter luncheons. Offerings for this year include, our Fifth Annual Reverse Trade Show on April 24 th. Once again it will be held at the University Center located at 14013 N. 22nd Street, in Tampa. It is a great opportunity to network with other governmental purchasing professionals from various Tampa Bay Area Governmental Agencies as well as our vendor community. This year's event chair is Linda El-Shamy. The co-chair is Greg Spearman. Contact them if you are interested in volunteering and obtaining Stimulus Package/Scholarship Points. Another offering is our Fifteenth Annual Golf Tournament on May 15 th. It will be held at the Eagles Golf Club at 16101 Nine Eagles Dr. in Odessa. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place foursomes with additional awards for longest drive, closest to the pin, putting and accuracy. Jay Jackus is the event chair and will need volunteers for this tournament. Contact him @ 727-943-4871. A third opportunity will occur in November when the Chapter will have our Annual Product Expo/Trade Show. More information will follow and posted on our website, www.nigp-tampabay.org. As we march forward into the month of March, bring a guest and come join us in celebrating Purchasing Month at our Chapter luncheon on March 13 th at 11:30 a.m. at the Rusty Pelican, 2425 N. Rocky Point Dr. in Tampa. If you have purchasing month proclamations, please bring them to the luncheon for display. Page 4 Why Volunteer? And I say to you why not. I volunteer because I am a volunteer junkie hooked for life on the gift of serving as I reach my ecstasy with self gratification. For me there is no greater gift than to serve. I guess that is why I have chosen to be public servant. There are many reasons people choose to volunteer. Research shows that those who volunteer live longer, healthier lives. Volunteering is an exchange for an experience endured while availing your self of an opportunity. As we start this New Year, I challenge each and every one of you to make one resolution this year that you will commit to and not break. That would be to volunteer to serve your professional organization for at least one of our fundraisers. I can almost guarantee that you will be hooked once you see how much fun we have while we learn from each other. This is a golden opportunity to develop your communication, leadership and social skills while gaining experience and knowledge from your peers. This interaction could open the door to an opportunity for advancement in the future. Remember you do not know who is watching you. In addition to feeling great about your efforts, working along side with other people in your profession, you can also benefit by: Exploring personal interests and passions Attending trainings to broaden personal and professional skills Including experience on resume or fulfill service requirements Develop new relationships and make friends Earn points for scholarships toward the National Forum, FAPPO Conference, or Seminars. Earn recertification points for your Professional Designation Learn, grow and HAVE FUN with your NIGP Tampa Bay Chapter Members!
