President s Podium I feel like I am stating the obvious, but it seems as though each of us is being asked to do more with less in our jobs; whether it is time, money or other resources. Workers today are more productive due to technology, improved business processes, and most importantly, the desire to keep jobs. My experience is that finding jobs, especially for Facilities Managers, can be difficult during the best of economic times. Through in an economic downturn and it becomes even harder. As companies expect more from their employees it is non-profit organizations like KCIFMA that start to struggle. More of our members try to find that work/life balance and are unable to volunteer like they have in the past. I experienced firsthand towards the end of 2010 with a project nearing completion and working 70 to 80 hours there is little for time for anything else but your job and family. It is with these tough times, that several members have decided to not volunteer as much. There are some committee chairs and executive board positions we will be looking for volunteers to fill. Among these are the Events Committee Chair, the Golf Committee Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice President. Despite these challenges, we have a number of initiatives that are designed to update the membership better and provide mentorship to young professionals. Staring with this month s program, we will spend 10-15 minutes reviewing status of a few committees, reviewing the balanced scorecard, and answering questions. The board is also working hard to get younger members in the chapter and provide them with a mentor that will be there for these new members. Having someone to provide guidance and answer questions is a great way for young members to feel like they are part of the chapter. These are the future leaders of KCIFMA and we need to do all we can as a chapter to keep them interested in participating. Drew Knutson, CFM President, Kansas City Chapter of IFMA
