FEBRUARY / MARCH 2013 FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Set in Indonesia in 1965, the film The Year of Living Dangerously starred Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver and was about the turmoil in that country. This year, 2013, will be a challenging one for Lake Christian Ministries as we have seen our expenses rise from just over $100,000 in to 2008, to $327,000 for this year. Most of the rise can be attributed to increased food cost and client requests for financial assistance with utility bills. With the USDA continuing to cut contributions to food banks, LCM now receives only 5% of the food we distribute from the local food bank. LCM purchases 85% of the food we give to clients and last year we spent well over $100,000 for food. The remainder of food, 10%, comes from local food drives and grocery stores and we have lost two of those, ShopRite and Westlake Food Lion, over the last four months. Our own utility bill at the Ministry has gone up over 20% over the past year and our clients have experienced the same increases. Many times they must choose between buying medicine and paying their utility bill. LCM limits clients to one financial aid visit per year and imposes a limit on the dollar amount of aid. We direct clients to their local Social Service Departments for cooling and heating assistance programs as well as using programs offered by the utility companies. The majority of these programs run out of money rapidly and have limited funds. We continue to see growth in demand for LCM services averaging 30 new households per month. Our client households depend on LCM to help them make it through each month by providing food, clothing, household goods and emergency financial aid. Now more than ever, LCM needs continued donor support throughout the year. We receive no government funds and rely sorely on our donors to fund the Ministry. No gift is too small and we welcome any amount that we receive. Please continue to support us as we continue to help our neighbors in need in the Smith Mountain Lake area. We have been providing assistance for 20 years and rely on your support to continuing to serve our community. - Mike Bond

JOB POSTINGS: Volunteers are Appreciated Front Office & Warehouse Volunteers are needed to serve. Interviewers: interview new clients, input client info into the client database and do 6-month update interviews. MOMs: work at the front office window registering and inputting food orders for our clients. Phone Receptionist: answer incoming calls to LCM. Warehouse: load and unload donated items for our clients, keep warehouse organized and neat. Webmaster: If computers are your thing, your help is needed as a Webmaster. Please see Ed Reynolds or Mike Bond (540-297-3214) for more information. Financial Aid Counselor: If you have a genuine interest in talking with people, reaching an understanding of their needs, and finding solutions to meet those needs, Financial Aid Counseling at LCM may be the right fit for you. You will learn how to identify spending habits and pitfalls and to identify client needs. Once needs are assessed, a variety of resources is available for you to help clients address specific needs such as maintaining a roof overhead; keeping the heat and lights on; providing medical assistance, prescription medications, emergency dental services, and much needed dentures: securing financing for reliable transportation to work, and more. The rewards for making a difference in the lives of our clients are priceless. For more information, please contact LCM s Volunteer Coordinator at (540) 297-3214. PC Support team: LCM is in need of Volunteers with experience in PC problem analysis. In-depth is not required. Analysis is centered on knowledge of advanced pc skills in file management, control functions, printer selection and wireless operations. Anyone with advanced pc operating skills can be taught LCM system problem analysis. If you can manage files, know your way around the PC control panel and can assign printers you probably have the skills that we are looking for. If you have any doubt give me a call and we ll set down and figure out your level of experience. Anyone interested in applying to join the PC support team can do so by sending an email to Ed Reynolds at reynolds@kec-co.com. Please include your name, phone number and summary of your experience with PC s. PC Support team: LCM is in need of Volunteers with experience in MS Access 2003 and 2010 to work with the current LCM MS Access support team. Familiarity with 2003 Access is essential but does not have to be in-depth. Familiarity with 2010 Access is helpful but can be gained over time working with the support team. The support team is currently starting to test 2010 in readiness for a 2003 to 2010 conversion possibly later this year. There will be no plans to upgrade the LCM application itself so conversion will be straight forward. The support team understands that in-depth programming knowledge of Access is scarce and they will do all they can to help increase any new team member s skills. Page 3

FROM THE FOOD PANTRY Colleen & Jerry McNulty, Pantry Co-Managers We have all seen our food bills go up at the grocery store and Lake Christian Ministries is no exception. Last year we gave out Easter food baskets at a cost of less than $10.00. This year each basket is going to cost close to $15.00. Each basket has a 2 pound ham, green beans, corn, eggs, potatoes and dinner rolls. Last year we gave out 150 baskets and we can anticipate at least that many again this year. Please consider donating enough to fund a basket to help feed an Easter meal to a family of our neighbors in need. You can mail your check to the address listed on the back page, or bring it to our office. Just write EASTER in the memo line on your check. Thank you for your support of LCM. Free 2012 Tax Preparation Service - Luther Mauney Free 2012 tax preparation service is available for seniors and low income families at two places. It is first come, first served. In Bedford it is offered at the Central Library by AARP beginning Tuesday February 5 and running every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:30 during tax season. In Rocky Mount it is through the STEP program (540-483-5142) and through AARP (540-483-9238). Call for scheduling and more information. Page 4
