Ms. Diana Ugalde, will be one of our presenters. She is a member of SCLARC s Self Determination Local Advisory Committee and its Board of Directors. She has given presentations and trainings at CART, Cal State L.A. and various High Schools regarding individuals diagnosed with disabilities. CAC members will also be hosting/facilitating the following workshops: How to Help Consumers Identify Potential Problems How to Establish Healthy Friendships How to Have a Better Relationship with Their Siblings How to Have Healthy Dating Patterns for Consumers Who Want to Date (this workshop will provide them with knowledge to keep them safe while on social media). How to Help Consumers Who Have Been in Long Tem Relationships (this workshop is primarily about marriage). In our last meeting, Emilia Ochoa shared information on a conference titled Integration and Safety in the Community. The Lanterman Act Celebration Day has been moved and a date has yet to be determined. SCLARC and the State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) is offering an all-day training on The Independent Facilitator at SCLARC on Saturday, August 20, 2016, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to all those interested in the Self-Determination Program. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: All of the Fiesta Educativa events are posted on the SCLARC Website calendar. Carla Vega shared the following summary: We are preparing a camping trip this summer, maybe in Big Bear, and maybe we will spend the night, but we are not sure yet. We re not offering transportation, so each parent will be responsible for their own transportation. Alicia Cortez shared the following summary: Carlita s program is wonderful! As a mother [myself], I feel it is the mothers who need the most help. PAC Page 2 of 5

On Thursday, August 11, 2016, we ll be having a picnic and we ll have food, games, and clowns. Regarding Speakers: Alicia Cortez: I would like to see the speakers to go to each group because it encourages people to participate. Javier Cortez: We heard that it was hard to find a Spanish speaking speaker. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: You told me that you didn t want to do the presentation. Mr. Cortez did a good job with his presentation last time during the training. Dr. Williams spoke to the parents. I m not talking about the Town Hall. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: SCLARC can provide you with 2-3 Spanish speakers. We ve been meeting with the City Council in Downey and in Lynwood. Every 3 rd Wednesday of the month we work with speakers. Herlinda Rodriguez: What we re experiencing with our group is very frustrating. We don t have a speaker for July. We re looking for the right one. We re need money, because we don t have volunteers to help us with fundraising. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: We have other resources for speakers. If you can t find one, call me. Regarding money: Alicia Cortez: Sometimes the parents want to donate money, but we never charged. Last month, somebody told me that it is not right that we re putting in our own money. Then we had problems with the taxes. Last month I felt a little pressure from SCLARC. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: We need to report and show to the organization [SCLARC] every dollar amount. I meet with the Leadership every Monday to report to them. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: Give me a list of all the topics. The Auditors want to know where the money goes. Regarding Parent Participation: Marsha Mitchel-Bray: In the last meeting we needed more people to come. In the Town Hall meeting people showed up because they really care. We have 120 people with Self- Determination, but only 1 parent came to the meeting. This meeting is volunteered. I cannot make the parents to come to the meeting. PAC Page 3 of 5

Carla Vega: Some parents want us to take them by the hand. They ask us, Where are the workshops? I ask them, Do you want some food? We need to charge them. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: We don t charge anything. We have workshops but the parents don t show up, and we have the same issues. Parents do not support us and it is not SCLARC s fault, because we continuously encourage parents to attend the PAC meetings. Herlinda Rodriguez: We re not working for our children only, but for others, as well. I ve been trying to get more people to come to the meetings. We have to move forward. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: We want to be a group but we can t change their minds. Alicia Cortez: I really do apologize, please. Please forgive me, because I did not realize that it was wrong. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: I really do apologize if I made you feel frustrated. Regarding the Need for More Services: Alicia Cortez: We need more services. Our goal is to have more services. Rancho Los Amigos doesn t want to accept my children for therapy because everything is frozen and they have a waiting list. I ve been waiting 2 ½ years for services. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: Some dentists don t like to sedate the consumers because it s very dangerous. We work with St. John Hospital and they have opened 18 clinics throughout the city. Alicia Cortez asked: Can the Regional Center do the evaluation? Marsha Mitchel-Bray: No. The IPP doesn t include that service. Even under Self- Determination that service is not available. On Meeting Frequency and Location: Herlinda Rodriguez: We need to come every month. Alicia Cortez asked: Can we do this meeting in Lynwood? Herlinda Rodriguez: Meeting at SCLARC is better. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: I need to talk to the Leadership to see if we can come to Lynwood quarterly. PAC Page 4 of 5

Carla Vega: Maria and I are looking for meeting space in Plaza Mexico. Herlinda Rodriguez: Can you [Marsha] or Mr. Lee come to Lynwood. We ll be coming to SCLARC every month. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: Let s try to do it once a quarter. Alicia Cortez: I don t think once a quarter will work. Marsha Mitchel-Bray: Good-bye everyone! IV. Adjournment Marsha Mitchel-Bray, Director of Community Services and Family Supports, adjourned the meeting at 12:00 noon. Minutes submitted by: Nuria G. Castellón, Secretary II, CSD Minutes edited by: Margaret Easter, CSFS Temp, Administrative Assistant Minutes approved by: Maria Figueroa NEXT MEETING: Monday, August 8, 2016 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. PAC Page 5 of 5
